Question about SP 1.7
« on: 2 Apr 2010, 04:11 pm »
Alright, I cannot seem to figure this out any help would be appreciated.

I have a NAD M55 connected to my SP 1.7 as a CD player via the RCA connections and can toggle between the different filters, stadium 6 channel etc

I also have this same player hooked up via the 5.1 RCA inputs for DVD playback but only get sound when 5 channel bypass is selected. Why don't I get the benefit of the filters in the 5.1 inputs. Just seems weird and I cannot figure out why, unless the SP 1.7 won't do it.

If it won't how can I boost the sub output for the 5.1 output as there is no menu for adjustment on the 5.1 pass through. Some SACD's or DVD-A are not coded with sub info I guess.

The amp (Bryston 9bsst) and sub (JL F-113) are connected to the sp 1.7 via the balanced outputs, could it be that I need to connect them via the RCA's

Thanks in advance Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The Digital surround modes only work when your going through the Digital circuitry in the 1.7.  The analog bypass eliminates any digital circuitry.

You have to set up the levels in the MENU of the DVD PLAYER as that is the only way to adjust levels on 5.1 pass-through.

Thanks James,

So If I connect the dvd player via the digital input I will get the filters? If that is true the benefit of the 5.1 channel RCA inputs are the pass through with no digital processing?

Will I be able to toggle between the two (5.1 RCA and Digital) via the menu for dvd setup?  Maybe the manual explains this but I don't see it, wish it was better explained or your website had a place to gain this knowledge.

Sorry with no local dealer I bought some pieces through Audio Advisor and some used. This SP 1.7 was used and I am trying to get the kinks worked out and am having to come here for answers I would normally ask my dealer.

Yes.  You would be using the speaker level and bass management settings in the SP1.7 setup, and also have access to the additional sound formats.

If that is true the benefit of the 5.1 channel RCA inputs are the pass through with no digital processing?
Yes.  If you had a Blu-ray player, since the SP1.7 has no Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio decoders, you could use the 5.1 analog RCA outputs of the Blu-ray player (if so equipped - not every Blu-ray player has them), and you would be using the Blu-ray player's internal decoders and speaker level / bass management settings.

Will I be able to toggle between the two (5.1 RCA and Digital) via the menu for dvd setup?
Most players should be able to output the digital audio and analog 5.1 audio outputs simultaneously.  You should then be able to simply switch between the two inputs on the SP1.7.

You would then be comparing the difference between using the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) in the SP1.7 and the DAC in the M55 player.  You may prefer the sound of one over the other.

Jeff,

if you are using an analog output of your player (may it be stereo or multichannel) then the signal is already converted by the player.
if your player is connected for example via S/PDIF with your 1.7 then the processor will have to convert the signal.

keep in mind (as SRB already said) that you can use the analog 5.1 output of a BluRay player in order to get the "new sound" without buying another receiver, processor. simply connect the analog 5.1 output with your 1.7 and that's it...

Thank you sbr, that clears up alot.

I will get myself a decent digital cable and see what we get.

Thanks a million seems so easy now that it has been explained properly. I am sure the 5.1 pass through will sound better I just wanted to be able to give some things a little more bass and was getting frustrated that the new JL f-113 was not being utilized on music for high res.

I will report back when I get it up and can listen for a bit
