I picked up White Stripes latest LP "Elephant" (white&red vinyl). I've listened to the CD acouple times and the sonics were terrible so I never listened to it that much, but I like their music. When I put on the vinyl it was a completely different recording clear,smooth and nonfatiguing not like the CD, the LP's sound very good. Finding new rock music or any music on vinyl that has not been put on a computer during recording,mixing and mastering is very rare today. Recommend if you like this kind of music.

hmm.  I find the cd quite listenable.  As soon as I get my system back in order I might pick up the vinyl.  I'm sure its better.

I too find the CD quite listenable, however, the LP is something special, but that I find typical for any reasonably recorded newer albs.  

On my system the CD sounds pretty damn good, the LP sounds exceptional.  Maybe your digital rig needs some fine tuning or upgrading?

I think the audiophile fascination with the format has more to do with the fact that they're listening to old music cut on old analog gear moreso than the fact that it's vinyl.  I've purchased a number of vinyl versions of CDs I thought had harsher production value and occasionally it does help, but if you ask me, if it's been tracked onto hard drives you've lost the big fat analog tone.

You raise a good point.  I too find that not all LPs are created equal. Often times the era and pressing mitigate LPs superiority over CDs.  It isn't a sure thing.  I have found plenty of CDs that are better than their LP versions and visa versa, both new releases and old.   However, I still think that LP done well is usually a step up from CDs on the range that counts the most.

I'm new to this sight and I'm sure this question has been asked before. Where do you purchase new vinyl? I lve in a small Iowa town 2 hrs. from Chicago . Burned on ebay too much. I sold my Music Hall MM5 but will buy again if LP's are easily purchased.

well there are many places online where you can buy LPs.  I don't have those bookmarks on this PC sorry, but you should be able to find them in our links section.   You are pretty much up a creek if you don't have a local record store though as online sites I find to be on the expensive side.  I buy LPs at the Virgin Mega store in Time Square (close to my work).

THe key to buying LPs on Ebay is never to spend more than 2 bucks.  If you want new vinyl there are plenty of online sources for it.

Isn't it just that online stores seem to sell LP's that are intrinsically expensive no matter where you buy them??? Even if a local mom & pop record store were to carry the Classic Records catalog, they'd STILL have to charge $30 for them.  Local stores may tend toward the Matador and Lost Highway offerings since they compare favorably with CD's pricewise.
