Just get an external DAC. Best way to maximize your existing music collection. With SACD you are limiting yourself to the select titles they have available. Fidelity is important but if you don't like the music what's the point?

Nothing is ever that simple...
Tried 2 TT's

Rebuilt my B&O straightarm, with a local LP Gear at the time, new stylus etc... and borrowed a collegues VPI.  No comparison to my digital rig.  The perceived benefit was completedly outweighed by nasties.  I just cannot stand that background crap....B&O to storage....and it was significantly better than the VPI. I've been recommeded to try an Amadeus as its reported to be more to my liking.  We will see or should I say hear.
The search goes on.  I admit the top end Basis were pretty quiet and the Walker but that's just too rich for my blood.

Here's my TT. It's the Well Tempered "Amadeus" prototype (not a clone), using a Grado Silver cartridge and the superb Hagtech "Bugle" phonostage:

Kind of getting away from SACD vs dowloadable high-resolution file formats vs Redbook CD discussion.

The problem is that a reference must be established. It's quite appearent that a lot of changes are on the way and unless people are aware of them, they may elect to follow a dead end road.

Exactly Terry! In my quest for better fidelity I didn't realize I was already there for my particular setup. SACD's would seem to be a lateral
move in my situation. If my PS3 would have played SACD's I might have checked them out, as of now I'm fine with CD's and WAV files through my squeezebox. Thanks everybody!!!

Re: PS3 and SACD?

The intent of the thread was the desire to supplement the existing playback of Redbook digital .wav files with higher resolution digital sources, perhaps SACD's, if the PS3 would play them.

I though the discussion was headed to one of those dreaded vinyl versus digital ones, with the mention of turntables, tonearms, cartridges, phono stages, or the fact that a properly setup vinyl rig won't have distortion and background noise.

That's all.

Steve,
I just assumed that most of the people that are interested in quality sound already knew that vinyl was still a viable medium, that at it's best, is still ahead of digital. How much longer that will remain true is unknown, but it's getting very, very close indeed.

I'm lucky enough to be able to listen to several acknowledged SOTA systems that have both high quality digital and analog sources. An additional plus is that it's also been possible to listen to the newest formats and advances, often well before any press releases are published. Obviously, comparisons are consistently being made between the various media and my remarks reflect what I've heard, as well as the general concenus of those that have also attended these comparisons.

Great things are on the way!

Best Regards,
TerryO
