I had no idea,
« on: 10 Mar 2010, 09:58 am »
I aquired a hafler dh500 a while back, seemed to work ok after I replaced the power switch . I put it to work pushing a pair of HED H-15 studio monitors on my deck out back. Thought it was a basic hafler dh500, but to my surprise I noticed a sticker on the bottom, did some research, and here I am!
Apparently its a "trancendence 500", and that model is discontinued? Where might I find some tech info on what was done to these?
 Thanks

I think the modification in that case consisted of new PC boards and circuits for the front end and drivers. There's a pair of boards mounted on the heat sink tunnel. Then the fan was tweaked with some silicone so it would run quiet. Frank can surely tell you more.

It was a very nice amp at the time, and is probably still better than a lot of what's out there. You can enjoy it as is, or have it upgraded to the current Insight circuits.

There's some info on the Insight 500 here:

http://www.avahifi.com/root/equipment/amplifier/insight_500.htm

The price list is at:

http://www.avahifi.com/root/ordering_info/avaprices21610.pdf

It looks like you'd pay "$499 + 50 per output device including circuit upgrades."

So that would be $1099 ($400 off the regular price).

If it's not a Transcendence 2 or 3, it should be from the mid-1980's. It has all AVA circuitry except for the original Hafler transformers.

anyone else have trouble with the power switch? I replaced the one that was in it cos it was toasted, but the new one (same specs) shoots a little spark out of it every now and then when I turn it on.
Im also getting some pretty loud bumps when powering it off, Ive heard that could be capacitors going bad, is this the case?

Anything vintage like that is due to need something. The sparking power switch is not normal. even if you don't want to have it upgraded to current Insight specs, I would still make arrangements to have it shipped to Frank so he can check it out and replace what is needed. Another thought (and I'm not saying this is happening) is that if there were excessive DC on the output, your speakers will pay the price for it sooner or later (depending on the amount.) Better safe than sorry.

That's OK, he's new. Frank is Frank Van Alstine, owner and president of Audio by Van Alstine. This is his site sponsored circle. We usually discuss new products or upgrades to existing products, but occasionally, weird topics come up that are fun.

Call Frank he most likely can help you with your Hafler. Lets hear some HiFi news from Lake County.
