UPSCALE DIODES
« on: 13 Mar 2010, 05:02 am »
hello guys, i am working on merging a pass b1 with a panson compact series amp  to make my own integrated amp. i was looking over the parts list and i came a cross the parts numbers for the diodes, i was wondering if there was an upscale equivalent for them? here are the diodes i plan to replace:

1n914
1N4004
1N4148
1N4937
1N4148
1N5232

i do not mind saying that diodes are not my bag, i am putting a serious effort into getting the most out of these  kits so i just wan  to make the best choices, any help is truly appreciated .

If you do a Google search on your parts list you will find that some of these are ultra high speed switching diodes and you also have a Zener diode in the list. I suspect that the switching diodes were speced for their function in certain location in the circuit, the zeners also have a specific function associated with their location in the circuit. I wouldn't loose to much sleep over failing to use a boutique part in these locations. I am unaware of any boutique Zener diodes. The high speed diodes might be replaced with a Schottky diode with the exactly same rating if one is available. Schottky diodes switch very quickly without ringing.  The 1N4004 is a simple 1 amp barrel diode. If this is used in a power supply rectifier circuit I would up these to a 6 amp rating to lower the power supplies dynamic impedance.

thanks for the response scott, i just want to be sure that i am using parts that a high qulaity
when it comes to caps, coils and resistors, nowadays it seems to be a no brainer. but when it comes to diodes i am lost.  do you know any sites that will help me learn more about the different types of diodes?

These are the two best sites for you to get all these diodes from:

www.newark.com
www.mouser.com

Just look for decent brands, i.e. Vishay, On Semiconductor, Fairchild, etc.
