Question for James Tanner
« on: 15 Mar 2010, 03:27 pm »
I'm planning to send my BP6 in for a face plate change.  While it's there, I've been told I can have a DAC installed for $1200.  I'd like to know if this is the equivalent of the stand alone BDA-1?  Will this make my preamp a combo preamp/BDA-1 or is it still worth buying the stand alone BDA-1 over the internal DAC card?  Thanks.  :)

No the BP26 DAC is an earlier version of the Crystal DAC and is limited to 96/24.  The DAC in the BDA-1 can do 192/24.

In addition to what James said, the BDA-1 has more advantages -

More inputs - the BP6 will only have 1, and its coax only

Remote source switching

Selectable/defeatable upsampling - the BP6 is locked at 96/24

I think the BDA-1 uses 2 DAC chips per channel vs 1 chip in the internal card

The BP6 won't do phono and DAC internally.  If you don't have a phono stage or won't need one down the road, its no big deal.

I was seriously contemplating adding to DAC card to my B60.  I'd have to replace my phono stage and have to get something to convert my Apple TV's optical output to a coax output.  The cost of everything would be more than the BDA-1 in the long run.

Just some thoughts.

jaxwired,

the BP6's internal DAC is for sure a good one. but if it's doable for you then go for the external BDA-1.
