Cute little Weasel!
« on: 27 Feb 2010, 06:22 pm »
While snowmobiling in northern Minnesota on 2/21 as we were cruising on the trail, I saw up head a little white creature run across the trail. We both pulled over and stopped and this cute little Weasel hung around us for about 15 minutes! It would not come right to us but it came with a couple feet of us several times! It was a very cool wild life experience. It did not seem too afraid of us, it kept running around us diving under the snow and popping up here and there. It is so cute! Look carefully at the last picture, it's flying!

You are lucky to have gotten away unscathed, it was probably an orphan.  Those weasels are a big problem around here for snowmobilers.   There's usually two of them that hunt together.  The cute little white weasel will act as "bait" and put on a show for wayward travelers.  While people are distracted looking at the cute weasel its big brother will attack from behind.  This is a much larger weasel who spits an venomous vapor cloud from its mouth.  The venom will incapacitate the victim's central nervous system and the two weasels will start to feed.  They are still fairly small animals, so they don't eat much and often don't kill their victims, but they are still left with wounds which can be fatal if left untreated.  They frequent snowmobile trails during winter.  The big brother weasel is much slower moving and can often get run over.  The bait weasel will still continue to put on a show, however.  The more experienced guys on the trail know to just keep moving if they see any cute animals off to the side.  So be careful out there, had you run across a full hunting pair things may have not gone so well!

Oh yes, we saw them circling us in the woods just waiting for that moment to pounce! We have never been sooo scared! lol! Just like the ferocious killer rabbit in "Holy Grail"! lol! Next time I will speed up and run away, run away!

Here in the MidWest, the weasels diet exclusively on Snipe,  so they don't bother humans or livestock.  However, the downside is that the snipe population is now very low, so that if you go snipe hunting, the chances of actually bagging a snipe are just about zero.
