Help!!!!
« on: 14 Aug 2010, 04:02 am »
I tried to install a new cartridge on my Rega TT. I had a difficult time trying to get the green lead hooked up to the cartridge. Needless to say I broke the little copper gizmo off the wire lead. I live in Martinez Ca. Does anybody know where I can take it to get it repaired?

Hi Charlie,

Dunno that you can get those tiny little wire leads that go from cartridge pins to headshell (or tonearm) pins repaired but you can get a new set of four color-coded ones here. > http://www.needledoctor.com/Online-Store/Headshell-Leads

As you can see there's a bunch to choose from.  Hey, here's a chance to upgrade to silver wire.   Well, anyway, there are more sources.

Hope this helps.

Micheal Percey, http://www.percyaudio.com/ , carries cartridge clips:

Cartridge clips: Cardas PCC-EG gold plated brass clips to fit most cartridges @$1.00 each
Kit of four PCC-EG with color coded heatshrink and Wonder Solder… $6.50

Cardas PCC-ER Ag/Rh plated brass clips to fit most cartridges @$2.50 each
Kit of four PCC-ER with color coded heatshrink and Wonder Solder… $12.50

Cardas PCC super premium cartridge clips, silver rhodium plate, spring tensioned… $37/four

van den Hul direct gold plated copper clips... 1.0mm or 1.2mm (fits most) @$1.95 each

He is in Nevada City and usually turns around shipping quickly. It is usually next day to here, (I'm in Pleasant Hill on the PH/Mtz border.)

The Cardas clips are bit longer than normal.  If you are desperate to fix it this weekend, I have a kit of the PCC-EG with color coded heatshrink and Wonder Solder that I bought for a SME 3009 rewire that is in progress.  PM me.

You might also give Dave @ Stereo Unlimited in WC a call. He may have some clips in stock.

Cheers,
Geary

Those aren't the clips that will fit on Rega arms, which have wire leads all the way to the base plate.

Charlie, the fastest way to get a new lead clip is to go to Radio Shack and get a pack of the copper computer clips used for D-sub connections.  (Or if you have an old VGA connector lying around you can just steal one off of it)  They cost a couple of dollars and you can even get by without soldering it, just use some pliers to clamp down the tabs.  You will find them in the little pull out drawers of connection parts and they come on a strip.

PS Be very careful with the wires on a Rega arm, they are very, very delicate and thin, don't pull or prod.

If the clip just broke off from the wire, the fix should be easy. First, get a soldering iron and remove the remnants of the old wire and solder from the clip's eyelet. Have someone hold the end of the clip with a needle nose pliers, but don't damage the clip. If you broke the clip at the wire termination, you can still solder onto the clip, on the outside of the center piece.

After that is done, fix the clip. I'll ass/u/me that is was too tight? Then try to spread the two leafs of the clip apart a little. Use another cartridge pin as a gauge to check.

If you need to trim some wire off of the lead, that will be a tricky part, I'm hoping there is a little wire left for you, otherwise, this will be a bitch, but you can do it.

The other thing that you could do it solder a short piece of wire to the clip and solder the other end to the clip with the white wire. These are both connected to the RCA shields (also part of the coil loop) and are connected together in the preamp anyway. That could be another fix, and way easier. Always use a needle nose to put on the clips and don't force them. If the clip is too tight, spread them apart a bit.

Don't try to solder it yourself if you don't have experience. Obviously, where you have to work is awkward. It's very easy to melt a LOT of casing off of those tiny wires VERY quickly. You have to work quickly, use only a tiny amount of solder so it cools fast and using a heat sink clip on the wire couldn't hurt, maybe even another to keep solder from clogging the connector.

Hi Guys:
Thanks to Geary(gaylons) I'm up back and running. He came by this after noon and spliced a lead onto the green wire that I Broke the clip end off of. Without his help and all the rest of my buds on the circle I'd have been up a creek without a paddle. Needless to say I owe geary big time!!

The TT is up and running at this moment while I'm posting. Sounds pretty good. From now on I'm not going to put my big fat hands on it or anything else so darn delicate. I've learned my lesson!!!!!!!!

                                                          Cheers
