I Took The Plunge
« on: 29 Nov 2010, 11:50 pm »
Hi All
I bought a inexpensive tube preamp that uses two 6922 tubes
I'm looking for suggestions for some tubes to try
The Preamp is a Consonance Opera T-99/5
My first question is with the tubes that came with it, one is brighter than the other
does that mean anything ? Remember I have no experience at all with anything
with tubes in other words I'm as dumb as a bag of rocks in regards to tube equipment.
Thanks in advance...........Bill

These tubes truly bested my vintage Telefunkens. The price used to be astonishingly reasonable... like $35 a pair. Compare that to the high-dollar 6922 variations. Just a thought. Enjoy the tubes; it's another dimension/flavor to the music.

Bill,

Do you mean one tube glows brighter than the other one?  Some tubes do glow brighter than others from the same manufacturer.  If you don't hear one channel louder than the other, than both tubes are probably fine.  I can test them to be sure though.

Hmm, that's interesting.  I should test the tubes then.  You get the preamp used?

Maybe you should leave them tubes as-is Bill and bond with their different brightness as you have with your wife,,,, Mrs Pumpkinman being the brightest of course.  :rotflmao:

Congrates on the purchase Bill, it should be a fine complement with your vinyl.  :thumb:

Cheers,
Robin

I haven't tried a cryo version, but the Voskhod's are my favorites in my Onix SP3 integrated amp. I bought mine from Russia on eBay.  If you look for Russian tubes, it can be confusing as the 6H23n (Russian characters) is the same tube as a 6N23P (Translated characters).

I haven't compared them to any super expensive tubes, but here's the list of tubes I've tried in my order of preference (which doesn't necessarily match general opinions):

1) Voskhod 6n23p
2) Amperex Holland 6DJ8 A-Frame
3) Tesla E88CC
4) Amperex Holland PQ 6922
5) Reflektor 6n23p-ev
6) Amperex USA PQ 6922
7) Melody 6922

Hi Bill,

I have several NOS Amperex 6922 PQ USA White label that I really like.  When they are not noisy, the 6922 tubes that I have with give you that nostalgic 1950-60s tubey sound. :thumb:

You can find them at Agon.

Be well.
