aging gracefully?
« on: 19 Feb 2010, 07:49 pm »
I have owned a Soundcraftsmen A2801 amp and DX 4000 pre-amp since new, in the mid 80's.  These were well built and sound pretty dang good, too.  However, they are now relegated to the role of excess equipment and are not used.  I wire them up every now and then, and, in fear of popping noises and smoke, turn them on.  Still working well.

When do I need to start worrying about the caps?  I assume they were good quality and all looks normal, but there are some monster cans in the amp and I can't imagine finding any.  And I know that the output transistors are hard to find and expensive.
