BP26--noise/crosstalk issue?
« on: 20 Feb 2010, 08:22 pm »
Dear Bryston Circle,

I have a BP26 preamp (line stage), and it’s connected with a BCD-1 (just got this yesterday), a 4BSST-2, and a tuner.

I’m wondering if what I’m going to describe is a problem with the preamp, or if it’s just normal.

When I have the CD playing (connected to the BAL 1 input) and the volume is turned all the way down, I can hear every so softly the sound of the CD.  It seems to me that I should hear absolutely nothing in the way of the CD player’s output, correct?

Also, if, while the BCD-1 plays, I change the selector to BAL 2, AUX, CD, or TUNER, I can hear the BAL 1 output *extremely softly/quietly* if I have the volume set very high.  Is this a sort of “noise leak” problem (pardon the description–my technical knowledge is limited).

This “leak” is audible on other settings as well with the volume at very high to maximum settings (tuner is on, “leak” audible when AUX and CD are selected; AUX is on, “leak” is audible when CD and TUNER are selected).

I realize that it’s not the case that someone would select CD, for example, and set the volume to full when only a tuner were on, but is the fact that I can hear this “noise/crosstalk” something to be concerned about, or is it normal?  Is it also normal (or not) to be able to hear (at the very softest level, as in the examples mentioned above) the BCD-1's output (via BAL 1)  with the volume all the way down?

I noticed this just today.  All cables are secure and correctly connected.

I’d appreciate any thoughts anyone has on what I’m hearing.

Hi Michael,

I'm playing an SACD right now on my Esoteric X-05 connected to the BP26 BAL 1.  I turned the volume all the way down and switched to all the other input selections and got dead silence in all settings.  Same result with the volume turned up to 3:00.

Hi Michael,

If an input is 'open' (nothing plugged into it) you may hear leakage from an adjacent input (with a source plugged into it and playing) with the volume control high.  If you close the circuit by plugging in another source then you will not have any leakage between two used inputs.

The output from the CD players balanced out is very high (4.6 Volts) so it is double the usual output (2.38 Volts) from the unbalanced out so there may be some bleed through.

Hi Michael,

Glad your enjoying it :D

Here is the Stereophile review of the BCD-1 CD Player - you can see in the measurements what i mean about higher outputs than normal.

Hello Michael,

I just tried this also and I can hear music on different input selections on my BP26 when at ¾ volume and above - so you are not alone. I would not be concerned with this at all and congratulations on your new BCD-1 purchase :thumb:

Be well...
