Load impedance resistors in Piccolo
« on: 24 Apr 2010, 08:15 pm »
Has anyone tried swapping different makes of load resistors in the Piccolo. I have PRPs but am wondering about something exotic - Shinkohs for example ? Has anyone actually tried to see if any change would be noticeable ?

Well I´ve just finished fitting the Shinkohs at 100R, 220R and 470R so I will be able to compare them with the PRPs of the same values at the flick of the switch. Too late for a listening session now - should be a good weekend.

I´ve now tried my Shinkohs in the load impedance positions (R1) in my Piccolo (based around tubesforever recommendations - Black gates, teflon, Dynamicaps etc.- thanks again, Jim) and all I can say is that there is a quite appreciable difference in comparison with the PRPs I had. To start with, it goes lower, there is more bass presence and the bass notes vary more in tone and texture and are no longer just one note. Highs are cristal clear. The separation between fast piano notes is just so much more obvious as is the sound of sticks against cymbals. I´m really quite shocked. By the way, my cartridge is a retipped Linn Troika.
