Ultra-Cheap Amp Is Even Cheaper
« on: 11 Jan 2010, 12:58 am »
The now Dayton branded Sonic Impact t-amp is on sale at Parts Express for $34, including the power supply.  I have an old SI version in the closet,  but I am very tempted to buy a few more of these.

I have a spare pair of Omage AV21 -which are small bookshelf speakers about ten years old.  On the back the Omage say 6 ohm, 75 RMS.  I don't have a manual and can't find anything online.  Do you think this Dayton would adequately power these speakers?

Is this an exact copy of the Sonic Impact amp (other than outer cosmetics), or did they possibly use lower grade internal parts that could potentially degrade sound quality?

Hey guys:

Shipping, at least for me, is cheaper through their Amazon link:  http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-DTA-1-Class-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B001PNOH2I/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_0

I don't think it's possible to save any money on internal parts.  Outside of the Tripath chip, the original had a cheap looking circuit board, standard low cost resistors and capacitors, and substandard input jacks and speaker connectors.

It's most likely the same unit with a different colored exterior.

I agree, I doubt they made it "less than" the original.  I think for guys that haven't explored this little gem already, there's good cheap fun to be had doing tweaks and driving efficient speakers.  The TA2024 chip is one of the low-power winners in the tripath line up, IMO.
