Yes, where are those VR77's? What would the cost be if I traded in my VR5 Annies?

Gavin,

I picked up my first SHM-CD, Elton John's Blue Moves, the sound quailty is just as good as an SACD!! Great wide open soundstage!

The VR77's retail for $49,885/pr and will be offered in any paint or wood veneer finish for that price.

Here is some more info;

The all-new VR-77 speaker system fits in between our VR-5 Anniversary ($28,000/pr) and our $90,000 VR-9SE. in both size and price.  Although the VR-5 Anniversary has been called “the best speaker for less than $100,000” by a noted magazine reviewer, there are some audiophiles who simply need a larger version to fill larger rooms.

ROOM CORRECTION CONTROLS
The VR-77 features an all-new design, with Room Correction Controls as a prominent feature of this exciting model.  Since most audiophiles don’t have perfect rooms, we have engineered the same type of control flexibility into the VR-77 as employed by our famous VR-9SE model, which has been called “The Best Speaker In The World” by two magazines – Positive Feedback’s David Robinson (Editor) and Robert Ma of AudioLand magazine in Hong Kong.  The key to matching your room and speaker is to enable the speaker’s response to be adjusted to the room, electronics, and listening tastes.

The VR-77 features hand-built Japanese Autoformers, with 21 stepped positions giving a wide range of frequency adjustment without any sonic degradation.  Although expensive, these Autoformers are the best available and will enable you to adjust the VR-77 to your version of “sonic perfection.”

Our Holographic imaging and transient response rivals the excitement of a live performance- along with the exceptional bass response down to 15Hz, the VR-77 will provide a new benchmark in ultra high-end audio and is reasonably priced!

Triple-chambered hybrid transmission-line bass loading provides very tight, deep bass using twin 10.5" magnesium extreme-duty woofers and a front mounted 7" flared aero port. Response extends down to 15 Hz!

Borrowing from our VR-11SE flagship, high frequency extension and clarity is provided through the use of an aluminum pure ribbon super tweeter, with variable gain Autoformer control to allow for the perfect blend of air and detail in your room with your electronics.

Our proprietary Ambience Retrieval System enables concert hall depth replication, utilizing a rear-firing mid/tweeter driver fed with an out-of-phase ambience signal. The depth is adjustable with a calibrated control.

Available in five wood veneers as well as custom paint: pictured is Infinity Dark Titanium paint with clearcoat. Our famous Steinway Hi-gloss Piano Black is also available. Included are Mondo-Spikes and twin sets of WBT platinum plated binding posts for bi-wiring or bi-amping. Our exclusive Ten-Year Warranty protects your investment for a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

Every Listening Session Becomes An Event Not Soon Forgotten...
Spectacular Transparency,
Unparalleled Performance...

The search for the Holy Grail in loudspeaker design has led to new technology developed for the ground-breaking VR-77 Reference Tower. Acoustic Inverse Replication theory developed by Von Schweikert enables the VR-77 speaker system to closely reproduce the original sound-field recorded by the microphone. The holographic sound-stage image is beyond comparison; depth is adjustable via our exclusive rear-firing Ambience Retrieval System with Dimension Control.

New driver technology is utilized, including aerospace composite transducer diaphragms. The midrange driver cones are composed of Kevlar, carbon fiber, and cellulose acetate pulp, yielding a well damped diaphragm with a very high Young's Modulus (ratio of weight to stiffness), leading to a new reference standard in clarity, without the added ringing found in some of today's leading metallic transducers. The tweeter is hand made in Norway by Excel, fabricated of silk with a 4-layer damped dome, enabling near perfect reproduction of high frequencies without the typical break-up and distortion.
All drivers utilize the most exotic diaphragms and are driven by copper clad Low Distortion Motors utilizing long throw voice coils and extra-large magnet assemblies, ensuring very high dynamic range and the lowest measured distortion!

VR-77 SPECIFICATIONS:
Woofer System:   Twin 10.5" magnesium cones with long-throw copper-clad Low Distortion Motors.
Midrange:   Composite 7" Aerogel with Kevlar, carbon fiber, and cellulose acetate pulp coated and bound with aerospace developed Aerogel compound. Oversized Low Distortion Motor enables extreme efficiency and clarity yielding exceptional macro and micro dynamic performance.
Cabinet Design:   Triple-chambered hybrid transmission line with twin rear-firing vents.
Frequency Range:   15 Hz to 40 kHz (+/- 2dB). 13Hz to 100kHz (+/- 6dB).
Tweeter:   1" silk dome by Excel using Low Distortion Motor and Ferrofluid liquid cooling. Dome has four layers of damping coat. This tweeter has the lowest distortion we have measured!
Super Tweeter:   3" aluminum pure ribbon tweeter with adjustable gain using hand-made Autoformer.
Crossover Type:   Global Axis Integration Network for accurate off-axis frequency response and consistent phase.
Impedance:    4 ohms nominal, high current amplifiers recommended.
Sensitivity:   91 dB 1 watt at 1 meter using 2.83 Volts.
Ambience Retrieval System:   1" soft dome mid/tweeter with rear-firing wave-guide, Dimension Control for level.
Input Terminals:   Twin sets of WBT Platinum plated five-way binding posts.
Power Rating:   20 watts min., 500 watts maximum.
Dimensions:   56" H x 18" W x 30" D
Weight:      275 lbs. Bass. 105 lbs. M/T (380 lbs. combined per side). 760 lbs. system.
Warranty:   Ten Years excluding abuse or burnt voice coils due to amp clipping.

I'd like 1" thick, 24K gold veneer, please.

Hey Scott,

Do you know if these pix are still current?  I don't see that ribbon super tweeter.

The ribbon tweeter is the very top driver. It appears to be the same or similar to the tweeter employed in the Salk audio line.

Indeed it does. The tweeter looks like the ones used on a number of Josephs.

@ Gavin

These are prototype speakers so who knows what Albert will ultimately do  :dunno:  I like the Dual Ring Radiators a lot and hope the 77 will still have the custom R2904.

As far as I know the cabinets have already been changed aesthetically. Good news to me. The prototype had these strange creases and the proportions of the M/T module vis a vis the bass modules reminded me of Lego characters.

The 7 spot is a conundrum. Do you make big 5s or smaller 9s   I'm leaning towards the latter.

And a VR5 Anniversary in pic #2.  We won't be seeing Joe's reflection in any future photos. :(
