Looking good there! I'll be very interested in your comparisons when you run in your cable a bit and have the time. Thanks! P.S: Any reason why you didn't consider going balanced?
One of my long list of aborted and failed DIY efforts is a cable for my Senn 580s. I used the Cardas connectors, but screwed up the soldering. Do you have any tips for successfully soldering the wires to the pins, for when I summon the enthusiasm to try again?Chad
Cool, looking good. Now that these mini Cardas plugs are available to the public I wouldn't be surprised to read about more people making cables for their headphones. That was always the thing that held everyone back before.
Looking good Sonny! I've made my own out of some mini Belden microphone cable I got from a friends studio. I braided 2 runs and used 2 wires per side. It beat the Cardas and the few other aftermarket cables that I tried. It doesn't look pretty like yours, but it definitely made a positive difference when I owned the HD650's.
Balanced amps use two wires per per driver for a total of four wires. That way, they don't share a common ground wire as in the standard three-wire configuration. Balanced amp topology is also different so there may be less noise. There is even one three-wire (unbalanced) headphone amp that I know of using a separate amplifier circuit for the common ground. If you're finicky about your insulating materials, even in small quantities, you may want to avoid hot glue. Personally, I doubt it would make any difference at all over a short distance.- Eric
