Bugle power supply?
« on: 27 Jan 2010, 12:42 am »
I have the active crossover boards for the original Phoenix speakers by Siegfried Linkwitz.  Yes, it has taken me a long time getting around to building them!  They are mono boards, draw around 100ma each (10 opamps at 10ma), and call for a regulated 12v supply.  The plans specify a walwart, but I would prefer a dedicated PSU. Can I use the Bugle power supply, or would 15v be too much?   If good to go, can I use one power supply for both boards in one enclosure, or one each in separate enclosures?  And can the Bugle PSU outputs be parralleled for more current?  Sorry for the newbie questions, but ya gotta start somewhere!

The bugle power supply has +15v and -15v. I am assuming you only need the + part of the supply.
Simply remove the LM78M15 voltage regulator and replace it with a LM78M12 (or something similar) voltage regulator and you've got your 12 volts.

Cheers

Okay, so can I use two 12v pos regulators?  And would the current be sufficient?

Two bugle power supplies hooked up in parallel with 12 volt regulators installed will supply 200 mA (or very close) of current at 12 VDC.

One other little known fact that I am privy to is that Jim Hagerman's genius tells us that the heat sink for the voltage regulator is more for looks. The voltage regulator can handle much more current than the circuit calls for.

I know I didn't spoil anything for you Jim......thank you for your inovation and engineering excellence.

Cheers.................Jack

Thanks for that jcg, but my ignorance goes deeper, so bear with me for a bit!  The transformer has dual secondaries, the Bugle psu has two outputs.
So--can I replace the negative regulator with a positive one, and run my two boards with the one power supply?

Not a chance. The input voltage to U2 (the negative regulator) is around -18 volts. These regulators are not designed to reverse polarity and would probably blow up.

To make things easier, I think I'll go with the original plans. Thanks for you help anyway.

If you build using the 7W 12Vtransformer, then change the 10 ohms between input caps, the output will deliver 200mA.  You can leave out all the stuff for the negative supply.

Thanks Jim, that makes things clearer.  Understanding is coming (very!) slowly!
