OK folks, fill me in
« on: 30 Dec 2009, 12:20 am »
I'm getting a pair of "new to me" Lorelei's on Thursday when FedEx delivers them.
They are cherry with a lighter trim around the edges and appear to be in like-new
condition.   So:  What cables do you recommend?  I'm going to be using Audio Research
tubes to drive them...100wpc,but would like to hear experiences from those who have
tried different amps in the search to find the most synergistic pairing.  My personal taste
runs toward solid bass and midbass with a full midrange.  I'm very sensitive to dry, bleached
out sound and sharp upper midrange/lower highs.  I've been using Tyler Linbrook II's so I'm not looking
for so much a quality change as I am a bit of a tonal change.
regards,

For my Odyssey Audio Kismet speakers, I'm using an Audio by Van Alstine Ultra 550 amp and DIY speaker cables I made using Canare wire and Dayton Audio banana connectors. Works great!

Thanks for the info!   I see the Kismet speakers listed
on the Odyssey website, but the link is broken.  Tell
me about them.

Klaus described the Kismet speakers as Lorelei's on steroids and I think that's a pretty good description. Major upgrade to the crossover network and comes with speaker bases.

Hibuck....

The link's not broken, information on the Kismet has yet to be made available to the general public. I had the same problem years ago when I tried to find out general info on my Lorelei's. Any available info came from word-of-mouth owners, much as it is today with the Kismets. It's just the way it is as Odyssey isn't a big corporation and doesn't have a whole lotta time or personal to provide much other than a quality audiophile product.

I'm running Butler Audio tube hybrid amps (two 3150's) and a Sunfire Theater Grand 4 processor with my 2 sets of Lorelei's in a music/HT system. I use Ridge Street Poiema!!! all silver cabling, highly revealing but smooth, not bright. I use Sistrum Platforms SP-004 for all 4 Lorelei's for excelled isolation. My soundstage with my Lorelei's w/minimal toe-in is very large and deep, it's their strength along with a sweet midrange. I cut my main Lorelei's @ 80Hzs and use an ACI Force XL subwoofer which I feel give the midrange drivers more power access while further enhancing the midrange dynamics. Plus I just prefer a subwoofer bass to that of ported bass even tho adding a sub is strictly an option and not a necessity with the Lorelei's which have more bass than you can shake a stick at.

Sweet midrange & highs are the Lorelei's strong points along with solid imaging and expansive soundstage with minimal toe-in required. The ported bass can be a little overpowering, especially when they are being broke-in which will take a while. So if the bass sounds bloated, give it a few months to settle down. The midrange/highs of the Scan-Speak drivers will be sweet straight outta the box. I've found 150wpc work well with the Lorelei's.  :thumb:

Thanks for the input...keep it comin'!   I got them today, they are used, so I think they're already broken in.  I wasn't prepared for how much bottom end there was.  It's not real taut down in the 40hz
range, but it's strong with good impact.  My first assessment is that they are very smooth and the midbass I've been missing is back.  Tonally, they are similar to the ACI Jaguar 2000's I used to have and have been missing ever since I sold them.   The Lorelei's are unusual in that they are a bit laid back and still revealing.  I'm hearing things in the production of some CD's I'm familiar with that I haven't heard before.  I'm going to get some paving squares to put under them on Saturday to help them be a bit more stable.

I'm running Jena Labs interconnect from the player to the SP-16 preamp and silver coated copper interconnects from the preamp the the VS110 amp.  Then Signal Cables double run to the speakers.
Anyone have some ideas about opening up the upper midrange w/o getting bright or shrill?   I still don't have the full measure of these speakers, but I listened today for 3.5 hours, which is the longest I've done that for a long time.  That's a very good sign.

Anyone want to venture a solid state vs. Tubes with the Lorelei's observation?

Hibuck...

I think you answered your own question,,, SS. It's a simple fact that the Lorelei's are made for and have synergy with Odyssey SS amps, they're both originate from the same German company, Symphonic Line. My Butlers also work very well as they are basically SS circuit board power with a tube injected output stage to the speakers. There's increased dynamics but with the subtle smoothness of tubes. It's said (by Lonewolf who has the 250wpc Butlers) that the Butlers are lite on bass,,,, for Lorelei owners that's a plus but I haven't found any lack of bass myself. I had doublerun Signal Cables to my rear Lorelei's, wasn't impressed (unlively sounding) when comparing to a higher end Ridge Street. I now run Goertz cabling to my rears to save money (25' runs x 3) as Ridge Street cables are very pricey. If you really want to liven up the midrange, get away from the economy cabling and look for some well build silver IMHO. If you have the Lorelei's sitting flat on the floor, cones will help with the midrange/highs clarity also along with strengthening the soundstage. I like Sistrum Platforms as they're apposing cones on a platform, double isolation but it's a very unstable platform,,, NOT kid/pet friendly. Outrigger Stabalizing platform cones are also said to work very nicely and are much more safer to use.

That's all I've got.  :thumb:

Thanks Robin...I really do appreciate the input.
I'm going to take small steps and watch for "deals".
I've been using tubes a long time and probably will
go to ss some time in the future as retirement draws
nearer and I am ready to get away from tube rolling/replacement.

Would love to hear some Butlers sometime...I used to compete
in car audio and Butler did a brief stint in that arena.  They didn't
stay around long, but were noted for sound quality.

Well, I experimented with placement and found that due to the rear port,
the bass really tightened up when I moved the speaker out about 6" further
from the rear wall.  I'm now 44" out and it started to change at 40".  I'm
36" from the side walls...and I'm going to make some CAT5 speaker cables
to see what that does.  I looked at the Poiema's but find them a touch steep
right now.

Mine are right at 40", measuring from the back of the speaker to the wall and 22" from the side walls but I have a small room and I want them 7' apart so I live with the side walls and room treatments.
Sounds like you're having fun there.  :D

I highly recommend the Double Shotgun speaker cables from Clear View.  :thumb: They are also very reasonably priced and Paul is a great person to deal with. You can find them advertised on AudiogoN.
