Best Buy has this receiver on sale marked down from $799.99 to $499.99, it has received great reviews.  Needed to upgrade my old Yamaha RX-595.  This is about $50 lower than previous low online prices through Bounti.com for this outstanding mid-grade HT receiver.

Here is a link to Onkyo's website for additional information:

This is the sort of receiver I am looking for -- what are some competitors with similar specs?

I was at Best Buy this week, there were Sony and Pioneer HDMI capable receivers on pretty cheap - assuming you are not needing a ton of power.

My requirements are not particularly exotic:

Must have analog to HDMI conversion (so you can hook up all your old crap to it and then route everything into the TV/Monitor with one HDMI cable) and 1080p upconversion. An HDMI input (and other inputs types, for that matter) on the front would be nice too, but not essential.

Any ideas?

This Panny was suggested elsewhere: http://www.pioneerelectronics.ca/POCEN/Products/Home+Entertainment/A+V+Receivers/Elite+A+V+Receivers/ci.VSX-21TXH.Kuro

Anybody have any experience with it or the Onkyo?

I directly compared and listened to the Onkyo TX-SR707 and Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH.  I chose the Onkyo and have been very pleased with this HT receiver.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.  The Pioneer sounds a bit warmer to my ears and the automatic configuration system is a bit more complex than the Audyssey MultEQ on the Onkyo.  The Onkyo was a breeze to set up and calibrate myself.

The only downside with the Onkyo is some HDMI handshake issues with my FIOS Motorola HD box.  Every time the audio signal switches from Dolby Digital to another format, there would be a audio drop out for a few seconds.  I resolved this by hooking up an HDMI cable directly from the box to my Panny plasma and a separate optical cable from the box to the receiver.  Works great, just can't run everything HDMI through the receiver as planned.

This is a Motorola issue, not Onkyo BTW.

Check out discussion on various amp threads at AVS forum if you want to knock yourself out.  It may however drive you a bit crazy as those are some of the most hyper-critical posters I have read in a long time.

BTW, the Onkyo has been on sale at Amazon for $469 w/ shipping recently.  A very good buy. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the helpful replies -- not sure that those sites will ship to Canada. I am also led to understand that Onkyo will screw you out of your warranty if you purchase from a retailer outside of your area?
