... as part of  RCA Victor's Theremin - to my mind one of the few good things RCA did...

Clara Rockmore playing. Notice the square baffle, point down, behind her. It looks like a 12" driver.
Her left hand controls volume with its relationship to the horizontal sensor/antenna underneath it (closer is quieter), while her right hand controls pitch with its relationship to the other, vertical, antenna (closer is higher frequency).
