Scorsese's triumph

Shutter Island has the potential of becoming the most talk about movie of the year.

Nothing to do with the record earnings, production expenses or special effects fireworks extravaganza.

Simply speaking, this movie is insane.(for many reasons)

The plot will keep you on edge till the very
end of the movie.
And that is where the discussions and interpretations will become vivid and stimulating.

- great cinematography
- stellar cast
- great performances
- interesting plot
- IMO one of the year's best (or the one to beat)

See it !!

****1/2

Excellent points in your review, especially since I wholeheartedly agree with them! :D  Very interesting and spectacular looking movie with another strong performance by Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio was great but cast in general was flawless.

Did you expect the way ending unfold?
I kind of did but it still took me a while to process everything.

Good to hear.  I still struggle with DiCaprio.  I pretty much couldn't stand him until The Aviator.  Regardless, even since then, there's just something about him I don't like at all.  Can't quite put my finger on it, though.

You have to start with a good source....The book by Dennis Lehane...a breathless read, though not his best, worthy of your attention!

I felt that same way about the guy but he sorta grew on me with The Aviator, The Departed and Blood Diamond. He reminds me of how I use to feel about John Travola early in his movie career and he's become one of my favorite actors.

Looks like I'll need to see Shutter Island now. The previews didn't really motivate me into wanting to but now I'm curious.

Cheers,
Robin

Word is that movie is close adaptation of the book.
Nevertheless, it is a hell of a good movie with twists and turns which keeps you on the edge.

Honestly, ....... I felt the same way about D.
Strangely, he seems to get better with age.

spoilers will ruin this movie
(it would be fun to talk about it ones it leaves the big screen)

Well done Mr.Scorsese. With a nod to 1940's film noir, Shutter Island is a stylized suspense thriller by a director that is still one of the best in the world.

Shutter Island is a masterpiece!  I was finally able to rent this one from BB yesterday and I say finally because copies are going out as fast as they come back in.  If you enjoy great acting and suspense please rent this movie.  A minimum of 4 stars out of 5.

I think it's his voice. It's like he's still in puberty. His voice is completely untrained. The camera loves him - he's extraordinarily photogenic - and he puts a lot of effort in his roles, but as soon as he opens his mouth... Scorsese knows how to play on his strengths, though and his command of cinematic language allows him to frame Leo perfectly in every film. I think DiCaprio has greatly improved as an actor since working with Scorsese.

I agree. It was not what I expected. Very strong film by MS. He's the man.

But let's be real, is ANY movie with Max Von Sydow a bad movie? He's so freakin' awesome.

Shutter Island is a masterpiece!

I'm surprised by this.  I probably watched this to about half way through.  I can't remember much about this movie.  Didn't do a thing for me.  The teaming of Scorsese/DiCaprio leaves me totally un-impressed.  I didn't get far into Gangs of New York before doing something else with my evening.  I managed to make it all the way through The Aviator but didn't think much of it.  I didn't like The Departed either (hum, I see a trend here).  Come to think of it, the last Scorsese movie I liked was Goodfellas...

Saw Shutter Island over the weekend...found it very engaging, held my attention all the way...just about everything meshed perfectly, the character, the events that defined him and the 'perfect' ending...well done.
