2 questions on this one. =)

If I were to use a real heavy speaker cable, could I loose signal strength or wattage with in the wire? I understand the basics when it comes to speaker wire. But I was just experimenting with cable that is heavy stranded and is wound into a 8ga wire.

Also, I've noticed that when I listen to music, usually from a cd, I don't have to turn the vol on my receiver up very much. If I'm playing a movie I have to turn the vol up quite a bit. Almost 3 times the amount. Is this because of the way they record audio music tracts versus movie sound tracts?

Ok there are a lot of variables here. For the wiring, yes it is possible for the cable to effect the sound if the gauge is super thick, but how much is probably not something that is quantifiable. Some things that may effect this is the purity of the copper in the cable, length, gauge, dielectric, corrosion, etc etc etc. So again a lot of potential for various results. And why are you using such thick wire? I seriously doubt it is necessary or beneficial.

As far as your question about CD vs a DVD player again lots of variables. Are they being played by the same source? If not you may have a cd player that has more gain than the DVD player. Also material is recorded differently. Most "Pop" radio friendly CDs are recorded at the highest gain threshold that the format is capable of with about a 3 db change in gain which means it will sound loud and slightly more loud and that's it, just like the crap on the radio (a lot of music is recorded in this way which really sucks).

A DVD is recorded with a lower level and will have dramatic upswings in dynamics as the action in the movie requires. This is to allow Matrix style gun slinging battles to have more drama vs other portions of the film.

Either way there are a lot of reasons for such volume differences.

Thanks for responding.

I was only messing around with some cable that I had. I got plenty of your Monster 14ga CL3 wire with gold banana terminations. Nothing special. I had seen some various wires and how they were made. So, I decided to make some speaker cable out of a power cable line. LOL!!! It's used for carrying some serious amperage . It has to be at least 6/2 or 4/2 cable. Each of the 2 insulated lines are made with 18 solid strand, 24 gauge copper wire, wound around each other. I have it set up to do a bi-wire job. I very much aware that this would be some low grade copper. But I was just tweeking and trying new things. I got a pair of floor standing B&Ws and wanted to see how they would sound bi-amping versus bi-wiring.
