Downfiring Subs
« on: 30 Jun 2008, 01:47 am »
Does anyone know if the GR Research Direct Servo Subs can be configured in a down-firing enclosure similar to the Tempest Sub shown here:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=gallery;area=browse;album=25&pos=14

I am just finishing up a set of Neo-2X and I would like to build a complementary GR Sub.  I really like the idea of having a Sub that is disguised as an end table (or shall I say... my wife does  :) ).  Any thoughts or guidance around this would be appreciated.

No problem there. Several have already been built like that.

You'll just need to keep them 3 or more inches off of the floor.

How does a laminate wood floor versus carpet floor effect a down-firing sub? I have a wood floor and I'm considering a down firing sub.
Thanks, JR43

You might find that downfiring on a carpet helps tame a tiny bit of higher frequency output (not sub frequencies, a good thing!) coming from the sub, but that is about all you should expect of a difference.

For what its worth, I have a HSU stf2 which is a downfiring sub.  Dr. HSU recommends that they should be used on carpeted surfaces.  For folks with wood flooring, he recommends cutting out a piece of carpet the size of the sub and set the sub on that.  You won't even notice the carpet and it definitely sounds better.
