Terrible cold and increasing PC prices
« on: 9 Apr 2010, 03:36 am »
I finally have some energy today after a terrible week with this cold. I hear it may continue for another week yet. I was wondering if I was developing pneumonia or if this was some strain of the flu for which I was not vaccinated (I had flu and H1N1 vaccines this year).

Symptoms: gradually increasing head and chest congestion each day, gradually increasing weakness, coughing and wheezing, may take 1-2 hours to fall asleep even with medicine, "death rattle" wheezing with each breath out when lying down in bed (bronchial asthma), sore ribs from coughing, after 5 days (by which time a normal cold for me would be all but gone) it still gets worse every day. Occasional low fever. This is the 7th or 8th day I have been sick. I basically missed a week of my life except for being barely able to work from home for a few days and dragging into work the last 2 days.

I got on Mucinex D (guefinesin and pseudophed) until I got burned out on it, and then did Dayquil/Nyquil for a day, then back to Mucinex D. A couple of days ago my sinuses started really draining and I was able to really blow my nose for a couple of days. Now its every couple of hours.

So now I finally feel I am getting better. Anyone else going through this crap?

SO...now I have a little energy and try to catch up with some of my ongoing projects. I had heard PC parts prices were going up...I know memory did go up. Well today before leaving work I checked BB online to see if there were any deals on internal hard drives, probably a WD Caviar Black. It was $99, nothing to get  excited about, so I checked NewEgg and Directron - $105 !!! Had been $95 I t hink, so I went by BB after making sure the drive was in the store by putting it in my cart, did not pay for it. I get to the store and they are marked $119! I had to go to customer service to get the $99 price. Get em while they are this price! I expect other prices to begin creeping up this week...

I used to get all the colds and flu stuff that went around.  Then I found out I was Vitamin D deficient (severely), just like most adults in the US.  Went on 4000 IU of D3 (not D2, which is worthless), and got my levels normalized.  Haven't been sick since.

NewEgg sent me email this morning:  WD Caviar Black drives (1TB) for $89.99 during an alleged 72-hour sale.  They may have raised the price yesterday, just so they could advertise a bigger discount during the sale.

Hmm... I'm seeing it back to $99 but not $89

Although I'm taking vitamin D also (5,000 IU/day, most days anyway), I've caught several colds this year.  However, I don't know what my blood levels of vitamin D are and I only started taking it about a month ago (although I've had colds since I've started taking it).  This is some research on Vitamin D:

Not sure how much stock to put on this for colds, though.  I'd like to see a Cochrane Collaboration report, but last time I checked, they didn't have a vitamin D and colds report.

I take Vit D for my heart (low levels are strongly correlated with high levels of recurrence for people with previous heart attacks).  I don't really put much stock in the "prevents you from getting a cold" statement, since Vit C was supposed to be able to do that and I still got colds while taking Vit C.  But so far (knock on wood), I've been healthy, which is good because heart attack rates rise dramatically during these types of illnesses.

Yeah always good to be as healthy as you can  :)

I haven't been very sick the past couple of years to the point that I noticed it, but this thing really hit me hard. I am feeling a little better every day the way I felt a little worse every day. The thing that hits you is that you basically are out of commission - no desire or tolerance for anythng that takes effort, for so many days. At the same time we have about double the pollen counts this year in Charlotte, compared to last year, so not sure how much that plays into these past 10 days. I can guarantee I would rather take vitamin D than Mucinex D  :)
