Your attitude in your statement 'It's not lying or fibbing ...' is annoying and I for one do not subscribe to 'looking out for your own interests ...' at the expense of another person or company, in this case Bryston  :nono:

I have visited Bryston on several occasions and have received exceptional customer service from Melissa, Mike and the crew to the point of them silkscreening a dress panel for an MPS-2 while I waited in their lunchroom!

hey dikon ..... no one cares about your trip to bryston. The only thing anyone cares about is getting what they paid for and that includes warranty. what he did wasnt that bad, totally salvagable, but he's is also testing the resolve of bryston's warranty. You wanna pay for his stuff then go right ahead. No one is telling you not to. I told him him how to get stuff done without costing him any money. But you don't seem to mind spending his money so keep on posting.

i can believe i even replied to that nonsense.

BTW this is a Bryston ownership board not a Bryston manufacturing board, and if i see an owner that i can see a made genuine bad mistake i will post in favor of their interests over Bryston's in heart beat. And if that means a little underhandedness then so be it.

I bought a Phase Linear 400 power amplifier in the mid 70's.  It had 2 U-shaped heat sinks on the back.  In between each pair of fins were the TO-3 metal case power transistors.  The metal cases of the transistors were of positive polarity, and there were protective snap-on aluminum covers to protect them from accidental shorting.

I should have powered the amp down before trying to move it several feet to the left.  I picked it up wrong and accidentally squeezed one of the the aluminum transistor covers hard enough to momentarily collapse it and make contact with the hot transistor case which fried two of the transistors.

I told the dealer and Phase Linear what I had done.  They thanked me for my honesty and appreciated not having to chase their tail and try to figure out why the circuitry had failed.

It was repaired at N/C and I felt good about my honesty, because that's what my momma taught me.  Excuse me for being so pathetic.

The right thing to do is to tell the Bryston dealer the truth, which happens to be that you changed the fuse and that the player just went mental afterwards. You can expect excellent service from the Bryston people in attending to your problem.

Even more unbelievable is someone that believes you can take a carefully thought out, designed and produced piece of sensitive electronics, especially a piece of Bryston eq. and significantly change its character by a "better" fuse.   Given I'm not an audio nor electronic whiz like most of you all and usually don't know what I'm saying but come on....what's next ....fresh air in the tires!

If you believe power cables make a difference then there is nothing wrong in thinking that a fuse can also make a difference. Having said that I would like to think Bryston already use good quality fuses so there should not be a need for any change.
Perhaps you are unaware but there are people who use nitrogen in their tyres for better performance. :)

Hi malique,

I spoke with engineering and it is not a software issue... so sorry but we will have to get it back for service.

malique,

I can send you new software to load and hopefully it was a static discharge that screwed up the software?

Also I think there is a factory reset code for the CD Player which I will ask Mike about on Monday - maybe the resent code will cure the problem?

Hello James!
I have just noticed what appear to be 'question marks' in your kind response yesterday to my predicament. In case you are waiting for my answer to the 'question marks', it is of course 'yes' on all counts. Any assistance will be appreciated.

James, I have to take the news stoically ... "so it goes", to quote Vonnegut

curious, our posts crossed.

Perhaps I can contact you via email in that case, so as not to clutter up the forum with the details regarding shipment, etc.

Mr. Moderator:

Sir;

The kindest thing at this point would be to put a bullet in the head of this thread!  Then lets start a thread that asks the real question of the day:  "HIFI Fuses, Truth or Dare!  or maybe "Natural Selection, Where did it go wrong"!   :D

Werd, your lack of class is astounding.  This guy isn't looking for warranty coverage and has owned up to that he "messed up"  and doesn't mind paying $ for his mistake.  How many 'audiophiles'  have made mistakes along the way as we pursue better sound - the answer is a lot of us,  maybe the majority.

I seriously can't believe the things you are writing,  in this forum where James Tanner puts a lot of time and effort.   Again, you have zero class,  NONE.   I feel bad for James when he has to read your kind of crap.  A/C should take your membership and gently toss it in the garbage where it belongs.

Now some of you see why many dealers don't allow in-home trials. Any mail-order house is going to get hammered with this sort of behavior. It'll then get passed along to the next buyer.

I do in-home demos for those that really want it or allow them to bring their gear into my shop to mate with products. I never let a piece of new gear out of my sight however as it can not honestly be sold as new when someone takes it home. Products on the showroom floor which have only been connected by the dealer can still carry full warranty and are as new as they are to the eyes and ears of the buyer. Some folks still insist on a sealed box from the manufacturer, even though the product inside might not even work as it hasn't been tested after shipping. many consumers are wise to this and don't mind or even prefer equipment that has been tested at the dealer's showroom as long as it has not been abused.

Dear Uptown
I wonder whether you could do 'in other words' in order to make it clear what your business strategy has to do with my predicament. I have owned the bcd-1 for over an year ... the experiment I conducted involves no one but me. What is the point, therefore, of your words, in the present context?

This thread is "exhibit A" for pointing out the necessity for all posters to read or at least skim the entire thread before jumping in.  Too often threads in a forum such as this become a useless "whisper down the lane" exercise where each successive post moves further away from the intent of the original poster and disintegrates into a collection of self interested content and/or fisticuffs in this case.  That being said I must say I am vehemently opposed to werd's suggestion that would basically defraud the dealer and/or the manufacturer.  Everybody has their own worldview and in most this would be considered immoral.  Furthermore it does nothing to answer maligue's original questions.

Hi Maligue,
It wasn't directed towards you. I was simply relating how consumers can be effected by the policies of some companies and the actions of other consumers. It relates to my business in that way and as a parallel line of thought. What I was posing, in other words, was that audiophiles are often very interested in the workings of gear or in tweaks and sometimes can alter a component whether intentionally or not. I know that I am curious as to the design and build of equipment and as both an audiophile and a technician, I like to have a look under the hood of many components when I first encounter them. I can't however, allow customers to do that with gear that has not been purchased and it seems that many web shoppers seem to want some sort of in-home trial. My advice was to simply be aware of what can happen because of those trials where the dealer loses sight of the product and who might eventually end up with those products. It does not directly involve your predicament at all. Rather I was elaborating on the circumstance as I have heard the same tale and seen similar results before. I have actually seen a lot worse things happen and wasn't trying to belittle your behavior or situation. You did the right thing by admitting what had been done and asking how it might be corrected.

Discussion forums are for discussing related topics, so that's what I did. I prefer to take up service matters directly with authorized service technicians. When you post them on a discussion board, they usually get discussed and the direction of the discussion may not be to your liking or to that of the intended recipient. It can help to have someone with inside knowledge of the industry to point out how things might best be handled in the future. Sometimes it just rolls the can of worms across the floor...
