Best new music heard at CES?
« on: 11 Jan 2004, 07:33 am »
I was wondering what great new music everyone discovered this year at CES.  I know I have some CDs to track down!

Here were some of my finds:

Future Sound of London -- Papua New Guinea Translations
heard this at T.H.E. show in the Gilmore Audio room.  awesome!  Paul Bolin provided the CD and told me it is his favorite reviewer track.

Nickel Creek -- This side
heard this in the Wilson/Halcro room.  everyone present was stunned and asked what is was!

BTW,how is the sound from those new Gilmore speakers? How do they compare with VMPS line such as RM40 and your RMX.

I heard the little Gilmore's in one room and the big ones in two different rooms.  Each time driven by very expensive Atma-Sphere tube electronics.

They sounded okay.  Very overpriced and very ugly.  Driver complement seemed to be four dipole woofers and a long B&G ribbon, like VMPS used to use in the FF and ST3.

Nowhere close in sound quality to the RM-30, RM-40, or RM-X, in my opinion.

Hi Larry,

It was nice meeting you, too bad we didn't have more time to talk.  I had some of my own music too, but I always like hearing new demo material.

The Gilmore  girl was definitely cute, I got her to pose for me!  There were a couple of hotties distributing bags at the Halcro room at the San Remo too  :P

With all the male international visitors at the show, I bet the "working women" of Nevada have been very busy

After seeing the Samsung & LG exhibits at the LVCC, I'm lusting for a 76-80" plasma Tv  :o

I had probably 30 people as me about "Black Light Syndrome"

Track 3 is probably my fav demo cut right now.  Literally, every single room someone asked me about it.

Here is the info on the main demo track that I was playing at my CES booth:

Gianluigi Trovesi Nonet - Round  about a Midsummers' Dream.

You can't find this in the US so you will need to use Catalog number ENJA 9384-2 from www.fusion3.com in Montreal, Canada. The total cost including shipping ended up being something like $19.75. Don't let the dollar amount on the site scare you too much since it lists everything in Canadian dollars. Expect it to take about 3 weeks from the time you order to the time it arrives (it does not seem to be an in-stock item so may take them two weeks or so to get it from the manufacturer in Germany).

Track 4 (upright bass and drums) and Track 7 (great for testing tweeters) are my favorites. This is definitely the best recorded CD that I have come across and matches or surpasses most SACDs.

Thanks for the info Julian.  I was going to PM you once you'd had a chance to recover for the CD info.

Please meeting you, Emily, and your niece at the show!
