one other question for you guys modding your cabinets-
i noticed on mine that the front mounted woofer is (poorly) sealed from the rest of the cabinet. did any of you do anything to seal up that chamber?

Upon inspection of the naked/gutted cabinets I was suprised to find staples on the driver magnets, a mess of hot glue holding the felt to the walls and covering the port inlet.

Most suprising though were the loose & open rabbets almost everywhere inside  :o(consistently ~.1" too wide).

All the holes for wire lead-through to the mid/bass & mid/tweet chambers were also not sealed :nono:

Where I could fill the gaps with epoxy, I did so....about 8-10 oz. of it. The front baffle to side walls used the most.  I will seal the wire holes with blu-tack or plastilina.

Disappointing quality/fit for such a well designed product.

The mid/bass cavity leaked, the driver mounting flange was very uneven, not as flat and smooth as I'd like to see.

The top of the mid/bass cavity is kerf-cut to make the curve, and the kerfs were not glued closed, they were gapped a bit.  So I smeared 1/2 cup of yellow wood glue by hand around the inner walls, trying to jam it into the kerfs and seams, 2 coats. When I was done, there was glue penetrating into the adjacent chambers.  Then I packed a fillet in all the corners with a small bit of plastilina clay just to be sure.

There were also some small fwd facing steps in the port which i got rid of.

I even removed the bottom platen and discovered that the laminated masonite baffle was not tightly glued to the side wall rabbets  so I injected glue with a hypo-needle.

It seems that structurally, decent fit 'n finish was used only where it could be seen....nice veneer job & piano black caps 'tho.

The good news is that these issues are not unworkable and I feel that the design is good enough to commit the effort.

Upgrading the network and moving it outside the box will then be the cherry on top :thumb:.

Wow, this sounds like a lot of work.  Might be even more work than just building a pair of V2s.

Meh, not so much work….although building a V2 is tempting…..I’m sure a listen would seal the deal.  But as I said, new gear is not welcome and even if I did smuggle a pair past the guards, I’d have to 1) craft grilles that pass the V2 off as a Mini visually (any good air-brushers out there?) and 2) keep the Kodo Drum CD queued up to accasionally eject the kid’s cats from those cozy V2 woofer cubbies.  Couldn’t live with myself there.

I'm pretty sure your crossover has a 1st order high pass on the 5.25" woofer.  First order is only 6dB down per octave so it does still get some of the low signal; just not as high in level...

Sean

I might also mention my ninja x over does not provide any protection from very low bass notes, on the front mounted woofers. a 10 hz signal made them move quite a bit!

Pretty sure Sean wasn't using bypass caps when he put the mini kits together.

He wasn't for a while, including when I got the Ninja crossovers for my Mini's and Ref 1.5's.  He later added it as an option, which he appears to continue to offer now.  I added the Platinums after I figured out how good they could sound.

thanks for the info ninja!  i am getting close to wanting to install the platinum upgrades on my crossovers, but since i had sold the dodd preamp the system lost so much resolution (marantz av7005 replaced it) its not even worth my time. i am currently working on fixing  that by building a lightspeed attenuator for 2 channel, but until i do, i think any mods after it are a waste of time/money :(

How are you liking the N3s?  How would you compare them to the minis?

I fell in love with Neo-3 tweeter when I had the demo N2X here. The detail present in the Neo-3 is just flat out amazing.

I don't think it is fair to compare the stock minis to the N3S with sonicap/mills and platinum bypass, however, the N3S is a more neutral speaker. Both are very good speakers. The mini has a heavy bottom end with the powered woofer and has a softer top/mid-range. I think the mini will benefit more from the platinum bypass than the N3S because it should help remove some of the coloring in the sound of the mini.

I hope you end up doing something with the caps, I am starting to feel guilty...

Don't feel guilty, my projects move on a geologic time frame, but they do move.  :D
