Just finished cabinet assy on AV3s
« on: 16 Dec 2010, 04:45 am »
Just wanted to give a review of the service I got from G&R.
Cabinents went together great, started them before ordering the speakers. Once I ordered and recieved the speakers everything fit perfect. There was more than enough wire, solder, etc in the kit. Everything is really top notch and packaged with great care.

Finished the cabinet assy today and crossovers last night. Dropped the speakers in to see how they sound.WOW... They sound awesome, only problem is one tweater is not working, need to do some diagnosses to find out why. Once i have the tweater fixed i hope to get them veneered this weakend as well as post some pics up here.

Once again thanks for the great product and ease of access to information.

GR reesearch is a great company to do business with. Their speaker parts kits are second to none and it has always been a pleasure dealing with Danny.

Did you go with the performance upgrade options ( Sonicap capacitors, Mills resistors, and No-Rez sound damping) ? I built a pair of AV-3's about 2-1/2 years ago with the performance upgrade options and still enjoy listening to them. Really great sounding speakers. I think you will be very happy with them.

Please post some pictures when they are finished.

After further troubleshooting found out the tweeter was doa. sucks but no big deal. Just ordered the AV-3S center channel:thumb:

Listening to Dire Straights Brothers In Arms Remastered right now and wow best I have ever heard it and I am missing the left tweeter.

I did order the no res but not enough and no sonic caps yet, maybe later. The bass is way more responsive today. I am driving these with a pioneer VSX-820-K.

Wow, that's really unusual for a GR tweeter.  My students have probably used 30+ GR drivers in projects, and we have never had an issue.  I bet that it got banged around in shipment.

When you were soldering the wires to the tweeter terminals I hope you didn't accidentally apply too much heat with your soldering iron. Very easy to fry the voice coil on the dome tweeter if too much heat is applied.

It takes a full sheet of No-Rez to do each speaker cabinet. Suggest that you figure out the sizes of all the pieces you need first and then mark it off on the back of the No-Rez before you cut it.

Dire Straights " Brothers In Arms" is a good test demo. I like that recording too.

The Sonicaps and Mills will definitely take the performance up to another level.

did not even solder the tweeter at all yet as I still need to veneer the cabinets when the weather gets better. just using crimp on spade connectors for now.

Update, got another matched set of tweeters from Danny today along with the Av3-s kit, installed the new matched set and kept the good one for the center channel. Everything works and sounds great. Going to build the center channel cabinent this weekend and hopefully start some veneering.

It is a pleassure doing buisness with Danny at G&R. Wonder how hard it is to chat with the owner of Martin Logan?

Overall these speakers are several times better than anything I would have been able to afford at a retail store. I have never heard such detail in home audio.

Just got the last waltz on blu ray along with the bbc planet earth series, going to be a fun weekend.
