October 2009 is ready

Audio Enthusiasts:
Affordable$$Audio's October 2009 issue is available for free download.  In this month's issue you'll find what we believe is the first review of the Emotiva ERC-1 cd player.  Also, Wyred4Sound's STP Preamplifier, Aperion Audio 6B monitors, and much more.
Thanks for keeping the audio hobby alive!

Looks great, as always. A highlight of the start of any month.

Keep up the great work.

That's a bad link.

Here's the right one.

Thats a pretty weak review of the Emotiva ERC-1.  First of all, while it has XLR, it is not truly balanced (per emotiva).  Also, it would be nice to have a more in depth review of the sound and how it compares to a few more cdp's like the Cambridge Audio 740c or 840c, marantz sa8003 and rega apollo.  The deal with emotiva is that they are supposed to compare favorably to equipment costing hundreds more.  There is a good user review on the audioreview forum comparing the ERC-1 to a high end reference player on a conrad johnson system.  The reviewer was impressed with the ERC-1.

I.Greyhound:
Thank you for your constructive criticism. The author compared the Emotiva to a similarly-priced unit by Cambridge (540), which is what he had on hand.  The final sentence says a great deal of his impression on the ERC-1 value. Had Dan had other cdp's available, he would have compared those as well.  Emotiva did have the opportunity to review the piece for factual errors but made no mention of correcting the XLR statement.

Please remember that A$$A is an all-volunteer operation, and is founded around the principle of gear being reviewed in a real-world situation with like-priced gear.  Let the big guys compare $500 pieces of equipment with $50k systems.

Thanks for reading

Unfortunately, comparing the ERC-1 to a low end Cambridge unit is like comparing apples to oranges, but i understand where you are coming from.  Its always nice to see a piece of equipment compared to something in its price range and something a little more expensive as well.  I would have liked to had more info as to the transparency, resolution and detail for the ERC-1.  As far as the XLR goes, we emailed Emotiva and asked if the XLR's were truly balanced and they said no, which leads me to question why even put XLR outputs on the machine if there is no benefit sonically to them!

I've never had problems with the web site before, but I can't get the October issue to download.  Even going to affordableaudio.org and following that link doesn't help.  I have no problem opening .pdf files from other sites, any thoughts on what is wrong?

I just downloaded the Oct. issue onto my wife's computer, which hasn't been to the site since I tested downloading the Sept. issue last month.  I would suggest refreshing your browser once you reach the home page.  if that doesn't work, open up your download window and delete the old download list then try it.  if that doesn't work, restart the computer and give it a try.  If all else fails try another browser.  Keep in mind that this issue is 18 megs, about 30% bigger than normal.

I had been eagerly awaiting part 2 of the TriTrix DIY speaker project.  When will we see project completion?

TIA!  :D :D

Re: the Wyred4Sound STP SE Preamplifier

By all accounts the Wyred4Sound products have sound engineering and good build quality.  And while it's true that sound quality is more important than asthetics, I think the front panel concept of the W4S components need to be rethought.  I just don't want my audio gear to look like an industrial motor controller.
