Surplus Transformer for Balanced Power

I happened to be browsing the Plitron Transformer site today. I took a quick look at their surplus products.

This happened to catch my eye:

"2400VA Encapsulated Custom Toroidal Transformer. Input: 100V/115V/230V/240V (multi-tapped primary must be series or parallel connected) 50-60Hz. Five isolated outputs, each 60V-0V-60V at 4A. Was used in multi-channel amplifier. Could be used as well for power conditioning: 5 x 120V @ 4A outputs, or paralleled for 120V 20A output. Fully encapsulated in aluminum case with textured black finish. UL and CSA approved."

It would be PERFECT for a balanced power system for your front end components. Parallel the outputs and it would be fine for just about any power amp.

It weighs roughly 50 lbs, so shipping won't be cheap.

For a ballpark of $275.00 US this transformer is a BARGAIN!

Here is the link to it.

If I recall correctly, these are the ones ThomasW tried out.  He noted that they buzzed a lot and ultimatel didn't work as well as the Equitech Q in a box transformer blemish deal that is only a tiny bit more money (~$400).  The Q in a box is a whole lot larger..

Sorry guys, I guess I need to do some more research.

Consider me suitably embarrassed

I'm not surprised that they buzz.............not because of who made them, but what they are.

Toroids tend to work better when you have something in front of them to get rid of the DC. Also, they will pass more RF crud than a big, ugly, stacked-iron equivalent.

(There is a good chance that we learned this lesson the hard way. You should hear what strange sounds come out of my sound room at the house when industrial users start ramping up stuff first thing in the morning.)[Readers should insert favorite smiley thingie here.]
