Original Modwright SWL 9.0
« on: 21 Sep 2009, 12:10 pm »
Hi:

I don't hear much about the original SWL 9.0--only the 9.0SE. There is one for that has been for sale on Audiogon for a while, and I am interested in it. He is asking $975 for it--Is that  good price? What would I be missing compared to the more expensive models? My budget is around $1200--Should I take the money I save, and use it in the future for upgrades? Is this even possible on the basic model?
Thanks!

Hi Pretender,
I think I am the one that bought the 9.0SE off of Agon you were looking at, got it from a guy in Nashville TN, I rec'd it Wed and have been staying up late every night, the preamp is awesome, I went from a Consonance A150 to a Rogue Model 88 amp which got me more interested in tubes again, I put in some Amperex 7119 nos I just got off of ebay, the preamp came w/ Raytheon 5687 which to me were a little too bright in my system, anyhow I am wondering about either upgrading the pre or the amp they cost about the same, if you do yours let me know what you think

Hi: Actually, I did end up getting the one I referred to in my original post. I did talk to the person in Nashville, but I did not act fast enough--You beat me to it. The one I bought is supposed to be the base SWL 9.0, but as Dan pointed out in another thread, all/most of the 9.0s were upgraded to SEs...

At any rate, I received mine on Thursday, but have not had a chance to hook it up yet. If I like it, I am going to get the tube rectified power supply upgrade. I am not sure what you mean by having the amp upgraded??

OK, thats good you got one, hope you like it, I am suprised these sell for 1k on agon, let me know how the power supply upgrade works out.

The amp upgrade reference means that I can upgrade my Rogue Audio Model 88 to the Stereo 90 for $1295.00, which is just a little over both of the preamp upgrades, so I am deciding on which way to go, preamp first or amp first. I am leaning towards the Rogue upgrade I think that would make the most dramatic improvment

When I bought my preamp, Dan told me that all the SE models had "SE" at the end of the serial number. Check there first.
I upgraded from a Belles Soloist preamp ( darn fine unit) and the change was very impressive. Hope you enjoy your new preamp as much as I did mine.
