Purpose of the BDA-1
« on: 5 Jan 2010, 01:09 pm »
What are the potential inputs to the BDA-1?

I understand using a CD Transport or digital output of a CD Player.

What other inputs would be processed?  FLAC files ia a computer digital output is the only other source and I do not understand how this is done.

I would appreciate your thoughts on how to use an external DAC in a Home Theater / HiFi system.

Thanks, JohnnyB

Quite a few devices have digital outputs. As you mentioned most PC  sound cards have digital outputs. In my family room i have a Logitech Squeezebox (music streamer) connected via a digitial link to one of the digital inputs on my SP1, which is "mapped" to my CD source on the SP1. The SP1 DAC is better than the DAC built into the squeezebox.

My computer, and I would suspect most folks computers, are not near our Home Theater or HiFi systems.

How is this overcome?

Do Music Servers have a wireless connection to the External DAC?

Aything with AES/EBU, Digital coaxial or Digital optical output in 2ch.

The BDA-1 is 2ch.

So...... hi def 2ch from Blu Ray/Hd DVD, CD, DVD, SAT or Cable TV, Game machine Sony PS3 etc, DAT, Mini Disc, digital stream,  almost anything these days with exception of turntable, tape, reel to reel, VHS/Beta video,

In hi fi between any digital source and your pre amp . If you have an analogue preamp (BP20/25/26) and digital source CD,DVD etc then it will usually be a higher quality than the source internal DAC this is its prime use. I would go so far as to say it should be better than ALL internal dacs.......

In Home Theater its use is more limited, its a 2ch device so if you home theatre is 2ch then well suited.

If you have one system for hifi & home cinema then still suited to that use.

Just looked at the Squeeze Transporter, $2000.

My Apple TV does Apple Lossless for <$250.  I use my SP2 DAC's and the digital coax out of the Apple TV.  Uses my large screen TV for music control.

I don't see the advantage of the Transporter over the Apple TV, since Apple Lossless flows with no degrade to the Bryston SP2 DAC's.

JohhnyB,

You originally asked how you get FLAC files to your BDA-1 DAC from your computer which is not near your sound system.

A recommendation was made for the Logitech Squeezebox products based on your specification of FLAC files.  The Touch or Duet models ($300 - $400) would be the recommendation, since you are using the BDA-1 DAC.  Using a Squeezebox product requires that you use Squeezebox Server as the player.

I don't believe a specific recommendation was made for the expensive Transporter model, which is usually chosen for it's onboard DAC.

But in your last post you said that you are already using Apple TV for this purpose with Apple Lossless (not FLAC) files.  Apple TV, like Airport Express, uses AirTunes to stream wirelessly from iTunes.  iTunes is the only player supported, and iTunes does not natively support FLAC files.  Some people have used third party FLAC plug-ins for iTunes (but it is neither easy or foolproof) or performed external conversion of FLAC to something iTunes can natively use (Apple Lossless, .AIFF or .WAV).
