Uber-V ??
« on: 30 Jan 2011, 06:41 pm »
Looking through the V range, there's one speaker that uses an 8 inch coax w/a one inch tweeter and a pair of narrow profile, angled 12 inch subs (the V2), one speaker that uses a 12 inch coax with a one inch tweeter and a pair of Servo 12 inch subs (the V1), and a 12 inch coax with a 2 inch tweeter that is open in the back with a pair of Servo 12 inch Subs (the Super V).

Looking at the P Audio drivers, I'm wondering if the 15 inch coax with 2 inch tweeter that they make would be a good candidate to mate with a pair of Rythmik 15 inch Servo Subs, for a ridiculously over the top OB system?  Call it the Uber-V!

Unfortunately the Rythmik OB drivers aren't offered in a 15" version. Nice idea though. :) The extra output in OB would certainly be welcomed so perhaps you could get by with one on each side and maybe a third somewhere else in the room all powered with one amp.  Perhaps a 15" version could be designed if there was enough demand. The PAudio BM15CX38 15" driver weighs in @ 38 lbs :o. :green:

Oh, I thought there was a 15 inch OB driver, my mistake!

I know about the weight of those P Audio drivers - even my V2's with just the 8 inch woofers and one inch tweeters make "audiophile" drivers look and feel like toys.

I don't see much need for anything more than 2 pairs of servo controlled 12" woofers in H frame.  Mine give me all of the tuneful and accurate bass I could ever want.  For HT purposes perhaps but for music doubtful IMHO.

I was thinking more for the extra dynamics and sensitivity of the 15inch midrange - you could truly drive them with an SET amp and get crazy dynamics.  Plus, since it's a 2 inch tweeter in there, you could cross it over lower, around 800hz, and still have excellent directivity matching and power handling.

BTW, the tweeter in the current revision of the V1 is open as well.

No advantages there but a ton of disadvantages.

No real added sensitivity with the bigger driver.

The larger driver falls off much worse in the off axis and because of that a 800Hz crossover point or lower is needed to not have holes in the off axis. That is not possible with that tweeter.

The larger woofer has a heavier moving mass and won't be as fast or as clean in the mid-range where it needs to play.

I designed a 15" OB woofer for the servo amps but never took it into production as there was just no advantage over the 12" version.

The wider 15" woofer makes the hole speaker wider and that just hurts imaging and makes it a harder sale.

And it also cost a little more....
