Truly guys, something I reckon is a fantastic opportunity, one not to be missed.

Hi all

A rare opportunity has presented itself for our Sydney friends to experience the inner workings of a recording studio, during a recording session.

I encourage any interested people to read on the comm's that I've kinda been party to, to get a heads up on what's on offer!



[insert sounds of gears turning in head]

Just taking your vague nebulous thought a step further...

How about this:

1) You and a bunch of your audio buddies (maximum of six people,
hereinafter referred to as 'the audiophiles'!) meet me Sydney for half
a day (i.e. four hours or so).

2) I will give them a tour of the recording studios we have at the
school, and discuss how we make recordings.

3) After the tour, I will conduct an audiophile-style direct-to-stereo
recording session of a musician, playing acoustic guitar and singing.
Three to five songs, probably.

4) The audiophiles will sit in the room with the musician as the
recording takes place, a kind of intimate private live concert. This
allows them to hear the actual event, and it also gives the musician
someone to perform to/for.

5) After the performance, we will play the recordings back through a
pair of high quality studio monitors to hear how they sound (truth).

6) We will then play the recordings back through a number of 'average'
speakers to hear how they will most likely sound through a range of
typical every day speakers (translation).

7) After any processing that may be deemed necessary, I will master
the files for numerous formats, including the original 24/96 files, CD
files (16/44.1), iPod versions (AAC) and mp3 versions.

8) The audiophiles can take the numerous files home with them at the
end of the session.

In other words, a *very* rare opportunity to compare the live
performance (or at least the memory of it!) against the recorded
event, along with being there for the creation of a 24/96 recording.
How does the listening-at-home experience match the live experience?
Is it better or worse?

There will, of course, be some copyright issues to contend with, but
no more than buying a commercial CD or downloading off the net.

This would not be a typical studio recording session, by the way, with
lots of microphones and tracks and so on. I really don't have the
patience for that kind of work any more. It's actually an
audiophile-style recording, similar in approach to how labels such as
Chesky Records, Water Lily Acoustics, Opus 3 and others make their
recordings, using very high quality recording equipment in a
minimalist fashion.

It could be possible to do this before I head overseas. I will have to
check the studio schedule, but a Saturday or Sunday afternoon is
likely. No promises yet; first I am checking if there is interest on
your behalf.

The cost? Around $600, which covers my time, the musician's time and
the studio time, and includes permission for the audiophiles to take
the files with them.

Greg mentioned max of six in the original post, after discussion he agreed to max of nine, so there are four places available.

I decided unilaterally that up to 6 people it would be divided equally, more than six then it stays at 100 each, gives greg and the artist a little bit of play money as a bonus.

$100, what's that! chickenfeed is what it is for an opportunity like this.

How many JAIBs whinge and moan, wring their hands complaining about the 'appalling recording quality'?? That's right, heaps.

Ah hah! Now how many of them are willing to learn and find out?

Seriously, have a browse/read. Some are about the tools of the trade, but some are SO in line with us as audiophiles it is not funny!!! This is the calibre of the bloke we can learn from, he is OUR KIND OF ENGINEER!!!

Okay, finally!

Ah, how's that for timing...

Here's the good news and the bad news.

The good news is that I have finally locked in a time with the studio
and the musician. The bad news is that it's a week later, on Saturday
the 24th of October, from 2pm to 6pm. But it is in and locked if we
want it...

Do you think that would be possible for all concerned?

It's the best I can do.

I fly out at 9pm the day after.

Would you mind apologising to those interested and see if they are
able to make it on the 24th instead? Thanks!

We'll be using the Piano Room to record, and the Digidesign Icon Room
to monitor.

Mastering we will do in different room upstairs, equipped with a range
of different speaker systems straddling truth and translation.

Of course, the photos make everything look much bigger than it really
is... sigh.
