Martin,

Talked to Klaus earlier and he mentioned you just purchased a new HT processor/receiver. You most likely have one of the earlier Candela units as apparently you are having problems with the HT bypass. I will call you so we can solve your issue.

Thanks,
Alex

Yes it is one of the earlier Candelas - I bought it at RMAF three years ago.

Waiting fo your call.

Sent mine in to bring them up to spec.  Painless.  Just watch out for ground loops if you have the 2nd set of outputs.

So... Bob...

(having read the thread in your link)...

... was the problem a combination of the Marantz receiver and the older style passive bypass on the Candela? Is this fixed with the newer active bypass? Since you had the bypass updated, are you now able to use the Candela with the Marantz without having to switch the connection to your sub?

I have a Marantz SR8000 and I have been thinking about getting a Candela but it would have to fit in with my HT set up.

I might prefer a Tempest (not sure I want the hassle associated with tubes) but I've not seen many comments about that model.

Thanks Bob I think I have the same problem...I just purchased  a new (used) Yamaha RX-42500 receiver.  It stays on standby mode when not powered on, if I unplug the RCA connection from the Yamaha to the Candela, the wonderful sound of the Candela returns.  I would estimate about a 20 DB drop in power as well when I plug the Yamaha into the Candela.  My hope is that Alex G can fix this if I bring the Candela to RMAF next weekend. Don't know at this point how involved the upgrade is.  I do like the fact that now I can listen to the Yamaha receiver with the Candela turned off (not using tube life).
But not worth sacrificing the Candela when listening to 2-channel stereo.

Thanks again,

Martin

OK, so I had 2 problems, really.

The first: with the original Candela circuit, I had to have my Rotel pre-pro and then my new Marantz reciver completely turned off...otherwise I'd get a near muted signal due to latent processing of the receiver.  This wasn't a big deal when I had my Rotel, because I could push a button and it would shut all the way down...but my new Marantz only goes to stand-by, so I had to send the Candela in for the update.  If I could have shut down the Marantz the same as the Rotel I probably would have kept the Candela as-is (was) because I liked being able to use my HT with the Candela off.  It's my understanding that this issue was identified by Odyssey after the first 2 production runs so they adjusted the circuit appropriately.

The second: Once I got my updated Candela back I had a ground loop issue (my fault) when connecting my sub.  I have 2 sets of outs on the Candela and run the 2nd to the sub.  I also tried to run the LFE out from my Marantz to the sub and connect with y connectors.  This created a loop which fed back to the Candela and caused the issue.  Simple fix was to run both of the sub connections to a cheap Radioshack 2 way switch and from the switch to the subs single input.  This way I can enjoy the full LFE signal from my HT and also integrate the sub during pure 2ch listening through the Candela.

Not sure if this was clear or not.  Hope this helps.

Cheers, Bob

I'm having the same problem with my Candela and reciever/pre-pro combo. It's not that big a deal however there are times I'd like to be able to listen to music through the Candela while watching sports or playing a video game and I can't do this without the reciever being on? So this is fixable? I'm in Ohio so I could drive my Candela out to Indy?

From memory...if the HT passthrough on the Candela is active...you can select your CD player and hear the CD player through the Candella and your stereo speakers and also see the TV.

My issue with this is that when I have my Receiver on it also sends signals to my center and surrounds....so need to mute the Receiver.

I live in Cincinnati.  Klaus was cool enough to meet me half way once when he was delivering my Candela and monos.  However I shipped it to him at my own cost.  Also, I think he is only willing to do this if it "works", i.e. I met him at a ski lodge half way between Cinci and Indy which he was going to anyway.
