Weight of lead ballast in VR2's
« on: 23 Feb 2010, 04:05 am »
I'm the new owner of some previously owned VR2's.  I have to say I couldn't be happier.  My previous speakers were Dynaudio Contours and the the  VR2's sound so much richer and fuller to my ear.  Now my question.  The manual that comes with the speakers tells you to add 25# of sand to each speaker.  I got 50# of lead shot and split it between the two. I have to say it makes an amazing difference.  I knew it would clean up the slight boom in the base, but I had no idea that the improvement in the mid-range would be so dramatic.  Sand, being lighter than lead, takes more space and I guess would fill the chamber.  The lead shot barely filled it half way.  Would I see further improvement if I were to add another 15 or 20 lbs. of lead?  Thanks to environmental concerns, lead is hard to come by in California and expensive.  I don't want to waste the money if there aren't any benefits.

Hi Rich,

We've sold quite a lot of VR 2 in Holland.

Never use sand in VSA's!!

Leadshot 2à3mm is the best, it is soft so it elliminates the vibrating energy and heavy so it stabilizes your VR 2.
I often used 12.50 kg in each.
It depends of the situation at home if you need less or more.
To much will be overdone and 'the soul of the music slips away'.

It is a matter of tuning, just try.
When leadshot is not around, just go to a tire-workstation and ask him for the leadadjusters they trow away when new tires are mounted and ballanced.
Take care clean first.

Good luck.

Thank you.  I did use lead shot, and thanks for the information regarding the tuning.  I can see that I need to be careful in how much more I add.  Also, never thought about using used tire balancing weights.  That's a great idea.

Hi Rich,

We use the tire-ballancing weight also to fill up the Solid Tech stands and audiofurniture.
Have fun with tuning. Take care with lead, clean your hands carefully.

I had the same question you have when I first got the VR-2's. I called VS with this exact question and they said that 25 lbs of lead shot was optimum.
I stuck with that and I am very happy. The other thing to be concerned about with even just 25lbs is the fact that the spikes will rip right out of the bottom if you are not careful. Cone-type spikes alleviate that tendancy somewhat but you stilll have to be careful.
Enjoy!

Thanks, I'm pleased to hear what VS says about this.  The manual that came with them speaks only of sand which I was afraid of because of the possible dampness problem.
I'm aware of the spikes problem because three of the threaded inserts in the plinths have been repaired after having been either loosened or torn out.  As these will be sitting on hardwood floors and need to be moved occasionally, I'm looking for some other way to isolate them from the floor. For now, I've attached 4 small teflon sliders to each speaker, but suspect this is not optimum.

Cor: I was careful to wash my hands afterwards!  Thanks for the warning though.
