help with a Heathkit AA-32
« on: 22 Sep 2009, 02:18 pm »
I bought this thing on Ebay a few years ago. It wasnt working right. One channel was out. So I found some used tubes on Ebay last year and they checked good. Still one channel was out. I gave up on it and put it away. Yesterday I was doing some cleaning and came across it. So I did some research on it last night. One site this guy had posted the same problem I was having and another guy suggested moving the tubes around and see if that fixed. I hooked it up this morning and brought it up slowly on my homemade variac. One channel worked ok so I shut it down and moved the tubes around and low and behold she works on both channels! Any ideas on moving the tubes around and fixing that problem? I has this buzzing sound on both channels its like a florescent light sound buzz. It gets louder as you turn up the volume, it changes tone as you adjust the tone controls. If you turn the voltage down it gets louder as the voltage drops and when you turn it back up its gone until the voltage stabilizes then the buzz is back. Any ideas? Im thinking its in the power supply, as it uses diodes as a rectifier?  And that its a A/C buzz?

Thanks

Steve

UPDATE!
I came in the house for lunch. I turned it back on to play while I ate lunch. I touched the chassis and the buzzing was greatly reduced. Grounding problem, maybe? I am going to put a three prong cord on it later and check for a bad chassis ground.
