Cartridge "House" sound - what's responsible?
« on: 27 Sep 2009, 04:12 am »
I was wondering, what parts of cartridge are most responsible for brand's "house" sound? Is it coils, cantilever, stylus, generator/magnet materials, or all together? Case in point: my friend has an older Miyabi cartridge, and one of the coils is dead. It is, of course, possible to rebuild it, and replace the coils, I'm sure Benz or VdH will do it. But will it still sound the same? Even if coils will have the same impedance? What is responsible for example, for Koetsu "mystique"? And it's warm and rolled-off-at-the-top sound? Is it a special brew of all parts working together, any special tuned resonances, some moon-sourced materials? All opinions are welcome, especially from gurus of cartridge design...
