Bi Amp the easy way

I hate "Y" split cables - For several reasons

  • They are ugly
  • Almost impossible to get a high end "Y" split to match high end cables

So when considering the heart of a Bi Amp system I found it essential to look for a preamp (or processor) that had the ability to Bi Amp with ease.

Essential is twin stereo outputs.

  • Two pairs of balanced outs is perfect.
  • One balanced one unbalanced will suffice. (BP20/25/26)
  • Pair of unbalanced will do.
  • You might need to be slightly artistic and use a variable record output from some pre/pro's.

Until now I have only used the BP25, Just seconds ago I noticed that the BP26 has a pair of balanced stereo outputs - That makes it perfect for Bi Amp use and a feature that I totally missed  :duh: :duh: :duh:

Its a feature I think should be mentioned more often  So here I am SHOUTING about it........

Feel free to mention others in the product range I have missed.....

(Of course 3 pairs of outputs would be nice  8)).

Andy.

I've been wondering that on my BP26.  I would like to drive the mains through the XLR's, and simultaneously drive 3 subs through the RCA's in a Geddes multisub setup.  Is each set of RCA outputs individually buffered such that I could drive one sub from the first set of RCA's, then use a Y to drive the other 2 on the second set of RCA's?

Hi Tom,

Yes you can do that.

Edited my original post.

The point is the same Bi Amping is possible and tidy with the Brystons.

Really balanced out is all you need on ANY pre/pro.

You can always unbalance the signal at the amp end if required, that removes any need for unbalanced outs - unless I missed something else today !!!

(Its a UK bank Holiday so I have been in the sun all day )

It should be noted that what you are talking about is passive bi-amping. To reach the full potential of biamping (and done right should offer significantly more benefit than passive biamp), you need an active XO that is able to mimic the passive XO in the speaker, and then completely eliminate the passive XO.

to give an idea, if the are 5 potential units of improvement by biamping, then passive probably gets you 1 unit along the way.

Hi Dave,

Do you have an active bi/tri amp system?
(Horn based maybe?)

I would like to hear more about your journey through passive and active bi/tri amping.

What kit you used in which senario.

Many thanks,

Andy.

I've not done much passive bi-amp recently -- a set of Tannoy Dimensions (i couldn't easily get at the XO).

My system is often different -- i'm often doing long term vetting of one of our designs, or revisiting old ones. My current main system is a set of FonkenPrime XOed to a pair of push-push CSS SDX7s (fully modded of course) in an aperiodic TL (when it gets to the top of the queue these will become sealed). Crossover is still in flux, currently 2nd order active circuit, but with the success of Tysen (biampped single SDX7/FF85KeN), i want to play with a PLLXO similar to the one we used there. Also playing with the addition of a cap couple super-tweeter. Trying to make this system as compelling as Tysen, but with better dynamic capability. I have parts for a tweeter amp but not sure if it will really be needed if we can keep the tweeter XO simple.

Pre-amp is diy CC>CF, a prototype for a design we did for another company (also with a string of improvements in the queue), power amps are a diy RH84 variant for the top, and a dual mono MOSFET amp made by Hitachi (we have had our hand in this one too)

I've been playing with systems, active & otherwise for 35 years, with a mix of commercial offerings (rarely left untouched) and diy, mostly diy now, commercial offerings seriously lack bang for the buck.
