My Crossover blew... could this be the reason why?
« on: 24 Sep 2009, 11:11 pm »
I had a component system installed Ef-61neo/drt-25 Pro - CDT Audio 6.5" Slim Neodymium Component System.  I heard a slight pop then smoke coming out of the door.   I took off the door panel to see if I blew a speaker.  The speaker was perfectly fine..... the cross over was fried though.  I think that perhaps this happened because one of the wires connecting to the back of the speaker was hanging off (completely not on).   The sounds was working fine before this incident.. so this makes me think that the disconnectedness of the speaker directly relates to the crossover being burnt.  I am trying to get the crossover warrantied, but if I get denied could I argue with the installer for reimbursement because of the faulty wiring job??  The wire seemed to not be clamped onto the speaker like the other wire.

Thanks,
Justin

This is what he's talking about

Maybe it is a resistor that smoked, which is no harm, and it might still work. Hook it up correctly and test it. If it's fried you will see the burnt part, which can be replaced. Post a picture in the lab for advice on which part to replace it. Maybe the installer will solder it for you and redo the connections, or you could just fix it yourself, the hard work of installing drivers is already done.

You are in the middle, tough call. Try the installer first, if no help, try the seller. If no help, fix it yourself, or start again at a reputable shop and buy the parts and install from one place.

How did it sound before it blew up?

The sound was awesome.  I called CDT and they want me to ship it in so they can see if they will cover it under warranty.  The shop said that they would reimburse me if it was not covered under warranty, and since I will be with out sound for who knows how long, I also asked for reimbursement for my troubles.  We will see how it all turns out.
