terry claims this is the best film he ever made. must say i didn't think it was nearly as good as Brazil. i was actually a little disappointed by it (probably from high expectations). i thought it really took a long time to hit it's stride. overall, worth seeing though. this was, of course, the last film made by Heath Ledger who died while filming it - the way they worked around this was pretty clever. but what REALLY made this movie worth seeing was Tom Waits as the devil, how perfect is that? (should note that tom could be washing dishes and i would pay to see it).

I agree that it's not his best film, though I think it's a very good Gilliam film (and I think it's going to be tough for him to top Bazil or Time Bandits.)  Yes, I love Tom Wait's acting stints, ever since Ironweeds, he always gets cast well, but as the Devil in this film, especially spot on and entertaining. As we any good/interesting film villian, I was excited/entertained each moment he appeared (because, to me, villians can often be the most entertaining/interesting part of a good story.)  I loved his depiction of ol' Belzeebub, and how at one point he admitted he never understood "all that black magic" mumbojumbo that people had invented to communicate with and summon him.
