Loreleis coming this Thursday! (and question about their bottoms)

Upgrading from my Nightingales to Loreleis which should be in my living room by Thursday evening.  I love my Nightingales but cannot wait to hear the difference in sound between the two!

I understand they come with spikes that you put on with adhesive such that once they're on, they're on pretty much for good.  My plan is to, at least for awhile, NOT use the spikes.  I want to be able to play around with placement for at least a few weeks if not longer.  Can any owners chime and tell me if it would be feasible to keep the Loreleis on old t-shirts or thin towels while I experiment with placement?

Also, longer term, let's say I end up in a scenario where they sound best pulled out further into the room than I'd like them to be most of the time.  Seems like spikes would be very impractical then.  What kind of options do I have as far as outriggers go?  And would it be absurd for me to even consider just buying some felt stickies to put on the base like I have on all the feet of my other living room furniture?  This way I could slide them around without worry of scratching the base.

My Lorelies are in a carpeted basement room. To reduce the risk of potential water damage from a leaky water heater or an inoperable sump pump, I raised the speakers off of the floor by placing them on plinth-like platforms I assembled with parts purchased from Home Depot.

Each speaker sits on top of a 16" square piece of ceramic tile. (You might want to spring for granite.) Beneath each tile are four large furniture gliders like these: http://tinyurl.com/mcyysp   The tile squares are large enough to hide the gliders. The speakers slide on the carpeted floor as though they were on casters. If your speakers are in an uncarpeted room, you can buy the large gliders that come with woolie socks that would let you slide your speakers on hardwood floors or tile.

I should also mention that I placed a thin rubbery "gasket" between the tile and the speaker so that the speaker doesn't slide on the tile. The gasket is just a thin nonslip throw rug pad.

Don't know if this setup meets with Audiophile Approval or has an acceptable WAF, but it works for me.

If I had deeper pockets, I might go for outriggers or custom-made Sound Anchor stands.

good luck with the Loreleis - I've only heard good things about them.  I think you're right on track- experiment plenty positioning wise before spiking them.  It's amazing how just a few inches can really excite certain nodes in your room.  Here's a reasonably priced site that sells outriggers which may work well for your situation.

Thanks for the advice so far.  I think the DIY route with some sort of block from Home Depot might be what I go with.  Might not provide the best isolation and acoustic solution but my current home is plenty compromised as it is re acoustics and I'm buying these speakers already envisioning a new apartment for them.

look forward to hearing your comparison, owning Nightingales myself.

Do you use a sub woofer with your Nightingales?

thanks,  1000a

I experimented with the sub that I use for my home theater, but the two systems are in different areas and sharing the sub or buying a new one wasn't something I wanted to do.  The one time I tried it, incorporating a sub did make a massive difference in bass, as you would expect.  For this apartment and future ones though, I want to keep things simple with my 2 channel and stick to 2 floorstanding speakers.  Hence upgrading to Loreleis.  My expectation and hope is that these are the last speakers I will buy for at least fifteen years!

Definitely no need for a sub with the Loreleis!  I've had them for two days now and while they are far from broken in, I am already amazed.  All my music sounds new again, especially my best vinyl.  Completely different ballgame from my old Nightingales, like chess to checkers.

Someone on audioreview said he had an "SE" version of Loreleis.  Is this just the current version or is that extra?  Also I believe there are four different finishes.  I'm surprised there are not more pics of speakers (in various finishes) on the website.

Call Klaus, he'll take care of you!  He'll explain everything.  Also, let him know about what veneer you'd like.

Klaus can do basically any veneer you want and will work with you on it.

Also, one week in and I am still loving my new speakers!

Hey slow_down, how is it going with the Lorelies?  I am looking at speakers in this price range, and I have read much about them, but I would love to hear your impressions beyond how much you love 'em.  Can you describe how you are doing with positioning issue (where do they sound best in your room)?  I'll check your profile, but if it's not there, can you list your gear?  Thanks in advance.

Sure, no problem.  Here's my setup:

preamp: Odyssey Etesian
amp: Odyssey Khartago
speakers: Odyssey Loreleis!
digital source: SB3
vinyl: Rega P3 + Dynavector 10X5 + Cambridge Audio 640p

I love, love, love the Loreleis.  The biggest thing for me is that there is ample bass that comes off incredibly clean and focused.  There is a warmth and richness to the sound that I expected from a bigger speaker but also a refinement and elegance that I didn't fully expect.  Positioning-wise, I haven't done much experimentation - my living room and furniture offer very few viable locations for the speakers, and I targeted in on one spot fairly early on.  It's certainly not ideal, and I look forward to the future where I can have them in a better room, but it works for now.
