First of all, excuse me if I don't know too much about speakers. I am currently running a pair of Design Acoustic PS-10 speakers through a Technics SA-GX550 receiver. The speakers and the receiver are both my dads. I decided to take them off his hands and use them as computer speakers. I had to re-foam the downward facing woofers on both due to rot. This was a nice project and the speakers suit my needs fairly well, but now I have a new project.

I acquired a pair of Bose 501 Series II speakers from my uncle today. I hooked them up to my same Technics receiver. Upon listening I discovered one of the woofers seems to be damaged or in need of new foam. It just doesn't sound right. Something is definitely wrong with it but I can't determine what. For some reason, Bose decided to design these speakers with non-removable tweed grill cloth. I am contemplating removing it either by prying it off or cutting it somehow. Firstly, what can I do to remove this cloth? Secondly, how do I go about figuring out what is wrong with these speakers? And how much do you think it could cost for such a project?

not my picture, but what they look like: http://i25.tinypic.com/znmu4j.jpg

These things are massive in comparison to my Design Acoustics.

After reading that, does trying to fix those speakers even seem worth it?

Yes and no.  It really depends on what your goal is.

If you think of it as an opportunity to experiment... sort of like a pre med student working on a cadaver... then you will experience and learn something new.  So no matter what the end result is, you will have gained an education.

If that doesn't interest you, then you'll have to calculate the cost and determine if the attempt to fix these things is worth taking that risk.

Yeah I'm not sure if it's entirely worth it. My Design Acoustics are fairly nice for my needs. Originally I was thinking of somehow using BOTH the bose and da's together by just sticking the da's on top of the bose. however these bose are too massive and don't fit anywhere nicely, unlike my da's. also i think i'd rather just buy a pair of senn hd280pros.

If all the speaker needs is a new surround, www.partsexpress.com has surround kits for not too much. better then shit-canning them. They are not the best speaker though. Sometimes better to just walk away. You could sell the good drivers on ebay or craig's list and help somebody else out looking for replacement drivers that still work. After all, your uncle gave them to you.
