WTB: Modder for 1616M sound card
« on: 14 Jul 2009, 04:57 pm »
I'm looking to hire some help in order to mod my 1616M. Below are suggestions, not mine, and some may not pertain to my needs. Here's my purpose for the mods:

1. Improve S/PDIF output to feed ESS Sabre DAC
2. Improve ADC stage for vinyl archiving (I just sold my Lavry AD-10 and wouldn't like to step up the 1616M a notch).

I'm considering using a Black Lion Microclock but if we can upgrade the internal crystal and get the jitter down lower than the 500ps or so stated, that would be ideal.

I have NOS vacuum tubes, some gear, or cash for the modder.

thanks
DC

"My suggestion is to mod following things.
1. capacitors
2. regulators ( I think LT chips are good enough )
3. crystal ( it will be a great improvement ! The question is: where do you set up the TCXO inside your vibrating PC case?)
External clock might be a better solution.
( you will need a sync card $79~99)
For me, I would rather upgrade 1212M to Lynx AES16

4. The pulse transformer PE65612 will be much better
or maybe Lundhal or SC979-01.

5.directly solder a good BNC socket onto the output pins.

6.According to others, EMU did a poor job on their
decoupling caps.
Find them out and do a correct job will cost a lot of work...

Have you ever thought about using an ESI Juli@ modded to output i2s to your Sabre?  Bunch of posts on Head-Fi about doing such a mod.  Seems straightforward and not very involved.
