Speaker suggestion
« on: 14 Aug 2009, 02:27 am »
When i first purchased my B100 I had a pair of B&W 803 and was happy with the sound. In past threads i read that the B&W's were a good match for the Bryston. A few months later i found a great deal on a pair of wilson sofia's and the step up was very noticable.

I have been offered a good price for both sets of speakers. And I was wondering what would be a good match for the B100 in the 20k range. My room is pretty small. 11ft x 18ft. I may not sell if I can not find something that fits. The Sofia's sound really good. Chances to upgrade don't come around often.

I will be going to Atlanta GA. next week and would to like audition some speakers while I'm there. Atlanta has a lot of high end stores. So I would like to narrow my seach. It's hard to find speakers to listen to in a small city.

I know speakers are a matter of opinion, but any input would be appreciated.

Matt

Yeah, the best speaker is what sounds best to you. I like big speakers like JBL, Tannoy, and Klipsch. All 3 companies have high end models.  8)

Hello Matt,

If you have an opportunity, audition the JBL Project Array speakers - please note that this is a most biased suggestion :D

Matt,

what if you take your B100 with you while you stay in Atlanta and check out some high end dealers?! the big advantage is that you 'only' have to carry one single box with you...
i think there is no better way to find out how a speaker sounds if you can audition your own equipment.

good luck! :thumb:

I'd question the use of 803's or Sofia's in a 11 x 8 room...but if it works...it works I guess!

I didn't know that a dealer would do this. It's a great idea.
I will probably get some strange looks walking in the front door with my amp under my arm.

One of the reason's i am looking before i go is so that i can set up appointments to make things go smoother. Maybe if I tell them that I am bringing my own amp that they can set up something  before i get there.

Thanks alot

Hey zip

My room is a bit small for these. That is one reason why I am in the market for different speakers.
I beleive I can go with smaller speaker and get a better product for the money.

Hello again Matt,

I think that al has a great idea - the good audio dealers will do this for you if you give them a "heads-up." My audio guys were only to happy to help me out with equipment set-up for the demos.

Good luck with your quest!

Atlanta has a lot of high end stores.

Really? Do you mind listing them? At least ones which offer speaker demos.
Thanks.

Of course, but dealers for them are scarce unfortunately.

Matt,

good to hear (read) that you like the idea with the amp! if your B100 has the digital inputs then you have another great chance to compare the sound of the speakers/sources. that way the digital to analog conversion will be done by the Bryston B100 and not by the connected source ( cd player, dvd player, etc...).
if you are using the analog connections of the source then you probably will experience some differences in sound, 'cause the signal is already converted. i don't wanna say that it will sound bad in any way- but if you want an all Bryston conversion then go that way.

once again: good luck! :green:
