J .River adds playback from memory
« on: 15 Jul 2009, 07:29 pm »
14.0.31 (07/14/2009)
8. NEW: Added option to play files from memory instead of disk which is useful in high-end audiophile environments. (file is loaded in a background thread to system memory (capped at 256 MB) and played from there)

I think it's hog-wash, but some may be interested; still the best player around fom PC....bar-none.

Interesting.  How does JRiver compare to Foobar with Wasapi, from a sonic standpoint?

I was troubleshooting something the other day and I could not get FooBar to use the EMU ASIO driver which I thought was strange; I couldn't use ASIOforAll on my system either (maybe a conflict with EMU?).

This should tell you how little I have compared the two. They have added the WASAPI exclusive output recently as well. I can't live without many of the features in J. River (zones, library server, custom meta-data), but they have a very solid audio engine (32bit internal DSP) and their ASIO implementation I believe is custom as they claim that Steinberg added some unneeded complexity to it. Give it a whirl and let us know what you think.
