If aethetics/comfort did not matter what would be the best floor covering for a listening room with wooden floor boards?

Probably covering the floor with GIK panels, but that's not terribly practical.
So I would suggest a large thick-pile good quality area rug with decent padding underneath, or good quality wall to wall carpeting. I think that retro shag carpeting look is coming back in style.

I would have a 3 foot square wood platform, maybe 4" thick maple, securely attached to the floor joists underneath for direct coupling the speakers to the most rigid structure I could. Same for the rack.

I've found that what's under the floor is of great importance.
If you can brace a suspended wood floor the payoff will be huge.

Thanks for the replies, I looked at those mats but must admit they are quite expensive for what they are.

I've found these...

so will make use of them on top of some sound insulating mat then place some carpet/rugs on top I think. Not too much money either for my samll room.
