humidifier for vinyl/listening room
« on: 12 Jul 2009, 06:51 pm »
So, I just got in my new Dodd phono preamp and have been trying to enjoy it; its a fantastic piece of gear.

However, my static problem is worsening it seems. Ever album I put on has a constant static clicking sound the entire time. When I pull the album off the TT the static is palpable and jumps and pops as I move the record off the platter.

I have to think its related to humidity level.

Does anyone have a humidifier in their listening room?

It sounds scary to me, having something that shoots water into the air around tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment...

Is this an advisable thing? Do others do it?

How far away should the humidifier be away from speakers/electronics, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

I've tried other things like wipes, cleaning, sprays, static guns, etc, etc, etc; nothing works.

Its ruining the sound quality as well. Everything has that static bite to it.

So, can a humidifier work??

Chris, just try one of those small 1-room humidifiers, put it in a corner away from your electronics and see if it makes a difference for you.  It's not like a mist is put out or anything, it's slower and subtler than that...

Thanks Arthur!

I have a lot of stuff crammed into my little room; those line sources taking up most of it.

If you haven't run your records thru an RCM....you haven't tried everything

No static issues on any record that has been run thru the RCM with a wet cleaning step beforehand.  Wiping while wet only will likely add to the static issue.

I don't have an RCM and my records are noise free.

Wow....middle of summer and you have a static problem, I'm assuming your in the South West ??

FWIW, the few times I did have an issue (winter months only), I tried 'GruvGlide' , it did help.

Look out for the small one room humidifiers.  Many put out a microscopic mist that ends up leaving a deposit of whatever is in the water; not good for sound equipment.  Make sure any humidifier you use works by evaporating the water (that's a gas, not a mist).
