Anyone pick up a D90 yet?
« on: 13 Sep 2008, 06:42 am »
I got mine yesterday at Best Buy but only had a few minutes to fool around with it because I had to fly to Germany today. So far, so good though... it definitely makes my D40 feel like a toy (although it's probably a little heavier than I'd like). High ISO images are fantastic, and what really surprised me was how good indoor pictures look with just the built-in flash. And of course, being able to autofocus my 50mm f/1.8 lens is great.

Now I've just got to decided whether to sell my Sigma 18-50 HSM or keep it and get rid of the 18-105 VR lens that I was forced to buy with the Nikon. I'm not sure whether or not to sell the lightweight D40 or keep it as a backup.

It looks like a pretty fantastic value. Things are sure hot in the DSLR world at the moment. I just read about the new Sony A-900 (!) and even the Panasonic Lumix G1 I find intriguing.
I have never owned a DSLR and thought the Fuji F31fd I bought last year would do me, but I am starting to feel a tug in the direction of these beautiful cameras, as if I am on the far fringe of the vortex leading to that black hole everyone's talking about.
It started with the Pentax K20D, then the Nikon D90 caught my attention, now I'm wondering if I'm better of with something a little smaller, like the Lumix G1.
What really attracts me is the fantastic results I am seeing in very low light. There are a couple of ISO 3200 and 6400 images in the gallery associated with the reviews in dpreview that are more than just usable - they are beautiful.

Technically, the G1 is not an SLR at all. I'm curious to find out how well the high-res EVF works on it.

The depth of field preview and shutter speed effect preview are pretty cool, too!

5 min max continuous take.
It may be because the processor heats up too much during movie mode, or it may be something to do with categorization for tax and approval purposes.
If longer than 5 min then it can be categorized as a camcorder in some markets and apparently this can be a disadvantage.

I heard it may have an issue with the sensor/processor overheating, but if it's just a tax issue, that would be great, because I'm sure some hacked firmware may be available in the future...

It seems that if you shoot at under 1280x720, you can shoot for 20 minutes.

I've had a D50 for a few years now and love it but the D90 is VERY tempting.  Either that or potentially going big time and jumping to the D300....YIKES!

I've got good / very good glass that I'm happy with but would like to replace the 18-55mm kit nikkor that came with the D50 and that 18-105VR Nikkor looked perfect for that, or possibly the 16-85VR Nikkor but DAYUM that's pricey!  What a great fit though with my 70-300VR Nikkor, 50mm f1.8, Tamron 90mm f2.8.

Nice... I've got very similar lenses, although I did upgrade the 18-55 lens that came with my D40 to a Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 (others are Nikon 105mm VR, 50mm f/1.8, and 70-300mm VR). It's a decent enough lens, but I'm thinking that I'll sell the D40, the 18-105 lens that came with the D90, and the Sigma and buy the Nikkor 16-55mm lens or maybe the 17-55mm f/2.8G. Okay so I'll end up getting the expensive 17-55.

I think I may hold off on the D90 until the price comes down a bit.  I have an allergy to full retail pricing.  I'll probably placate my need for something new with the 16-85mm VRII!!

Or, if I could find a screamin' deal on a D300.... :duh:

Gary,

Would the D90 DX have better technology than D700 FX? I am looking to upgrade to DSLR FX but got so confused since I am using D70S with some prime lenses.

Thanks,
Tan

Just found this topic again, and since I now have a D90, thought I would compare notes.

I have the kit 18-105 VR lens, the 18-55 lens that came with my stolen D40, and a replacement 18-200 VR lens.

I have also tried the Nikon 80-400mm lens on rental...

On order is a 35mm f1.8, but since it is indefinitely backordered, I think I will get the 50mm f1.8 for 'only' $134.

What do you think of the features of the D90? Having had the D40 for several months, I can really appreciate the features. I seems to be between a beginning DSLR and a Pro DSLR. The image quality is a s good as the D300.

The amount of data that I have to work with has increased, and it slows my workflow down. But that is the price to pay for 12MP...
