the BEATLES

I know there are other threads on AC about the remasters, I thought I would share my experience here with you fellow AVA'ers.

I bought the Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, and Help, remasters. I had heard many positive comments about them, but especially lately, remasters have not necessarily been a good thing. That is not the case here. I think these are amazing, quite an upgrade.

Sunday morning I stopped by brother Mark's with Abbey Road. His wife is a Beatle junkie, knows all things Beatles. After listening to "side 2" of Abbey Road, she is buying the Box Set and Mark mentioned that Abbey Road should be on the Demo Cd thread over in the Salk Circle.

If you like the Beatles and have ever lamented the quality of their recordings, the fix is here. Fuller, more low end, more dynamic, more defined, more open, more revealing.......I'll be ordering more, MMT, the White Album, and Pepper.

Mark will probably weigh in with a comment, but I highly recommend the 3 I have heard.  :thumb:

Well you should see Polythene Pam
She's so good-looking but she looks like a man
Well you should see her in drag dressed in her polythene bag
Yes you should see Polythene Pam
Yeah yeah yeah

Get a dose of her in jackboots and kilt
She's killer-diller when she's dressed to the hilt
She's the kind of a girl that makes the "News of the World"
Yes you could say she was attractively built
Yeah yeah yeah 8)

That's an interesting observation.  I think the originals are MUCH better than almost anything of that era, for pop/rock records. I also have both the original record, and an Original Master Recording remaster of the White Album, and while the remaster is better, it's not that big  an improvement. I used to use Savoy Truffle from the original as one of my test tracks. The average Yamaha/Pioneer/generic Japanese mid-fi amp will not play the bass track, and a hi-fi amp will, and the difference is dramatic.

Funny story about that. Very long ago (1984 or 5) I was listening for new speakers. I went to the local audio salon, and wanted to listen to B&W 802s. They all told me, oh, you don't want those, real muddy bass with no extension. I put on my various test tracks with their stuff  - McIntosh, Crown, Threshold etc. , and reasonable well-regarded cartridges for the time.  Sure enough, they were right,  very underwhelming. A few days later I went back with my Jensen's Stereo Shop SCA-50 MOS-FET control Amp and tried again. They were very cooperative, let me hook everything up with no issues. To cut to the chase, the little 25-watt control amp *blew the others completely out of the water*. Bass was tight and well-controlled, and had reasonable extension, at least as good as you might have expected for 802s. "Savoy Truffle" was the most dramatic difference, the bass line had *no* punch on the store amplifiers, sounded like you were beating a rug or an empty oil drum. MOS-FET, everything sounded like it should, resolution of every note was clear, and the attack of the notes was palpable. Every salesman in the store played their demo tracks on it, and at the end they wanted to buy it. I sent them to Frank, don't know if they ever bought anything.

Brett, how do find the "Love" albums that was previously released compared to the remastered  vs the original?

I have the new remastered stereo box set.  Was able to pre-order for the first run of them.

I agree.  They sound absolutely wonderful!!!

Huge improvement over the previous versions.  Gone are the irritatiing,  harsh treble and highs.  Everything is much smoother and musical.

A fellow drove over here from Indiana last fall to audition the HT3's. He wrote a review in the Salk Circle on his experience. He had a "history" with Abbey Road, and how it sounded was going to have a big influence on his speaker purchase. So while there are/were some nicely recorded cuts on Abbey Road, (and most of the Beatles albums)  it had it's share of edgy, schrill, bright and lean cuts too. He wasn't happy with the way a few of them sounded, (he was much less picky than I am), and he eventually went with a less revealing, more forgiving speaker. He would have been happy with this remaster. IMO

The fact that some of their cuts WERE done so well was why I lamented..........But those cuts sound better now. I agree that their originals were above average for that genre, my benchmark may be different, YMMV I guess.
