I am thrilled to report that the new, improved power supply is not simply an upgrade,it is a step up in performance. Right out of the box,Mullard 5AR4 in the newly modded PS 9.0 and Bendix Red Bank 6900's poking out of the player i was ready to hear the results of the transformation.LS36.5 with the PS 36.5 -ready with big bottle Tung Sol 5u4GB's starting to glow, i was poised to hear the "significant evolution",as Dan Wright himself referred to the magic he has infused in this unit. Truth be told, right out of the box it started taking on a more 3 dimensional sound with instruments and voices claiming their territory in the soundstage with stunning detail .You hear deeper into the performance :sounds on familiar recordings become more defined and unveiled with commanding authority. You hear the low plucked notes of an acoustic bass reverberate through the sound chamber of the instrument as the note seems to escape in the vapors of the music. Drums: snares are crisper and the basso profundo of orchestral kettle drums resound. You can almost hear the skin stretch as the mallet strikes!  Greater depth and separation, nuance and detail. The next level of the power supply has reached far into the musical spheres and brought forth the gods of music. A humble bow to Modwright for making their message as profound as they intended.

I admit to being a bit biased as I work for ModWright...............but here goes.

I have had 3 versions of power supplies for my Sony 999 and 9100. SS, tube rectified and this latest 'improved' tube rectified power supply. They have all been good in their own right and each has been a step up in performance. Having gone through this process before, I was simply not prepared for this ps to be so much better than the other designs. I thought that going to a 'fat base' Mullard 5AR4 or metal base Philips GZ34 was a nice step in the previous version............and it WAS...........but this new power supply has been an eye (and ear) opener for me.

I DO have an affiliation with Dan & ModWright but this is indeed the real deal!

If I understood Dan correctly, you are partly/mostly responsible for the upgraded PS offering after trying it at home and telling him how good it was?  If so, high marks, thanks for going there first.

My 9100ES power supply and SWLP/power supply are on the way to the factory for upgrade.  Dan said he needed to install a different power switch in the SWLP to make it work with the upgraded PS.

Looking forward to the improvements, but this means no main two channel until I get it all back. :(  Of course, I might actually get some work done around the house this weekend.

Thank you for your comments and support.

Thanks also to an exceptional team of technicians and engineering resources, we are able to turn our upgrades around MUCH more quickly these days, resulting in less down time and MORE time enjoying your music!

Thanks and take care,

Dan

To clarify, the new PS upgrade IS available to the following procuts:

SWL 9.0SE (SE or Signature Edition).
SWP 9.0SE Phono Stage.
SWLP 9.0SE Preamp with internal SWP phono stage and external supply.
Early LS 36.5 preamps are also eligible for this upgrade!

Sony 9100ES tube mods.
Sony 9000ES tube mods.
Sony 999ES tube mods.
Denon 3910 tube mods.
(All of which use the external PS 9.0 power supply)

The new Sony XA5400ES mod will include this new supply, clock upgrade, a more sophisticated tube stage, 6SN7 driver tubes and will be offered for $1995 (mod only); $3395 including player!

Current LS 36.5 preamps all utilize this new supply as we found it to be an exceptional improvement in this design FIRST!

This is because the new circuit is actually modelled after the $4K PS 36.5 external power supply that is part of our LS 36.5 'DM' ($9K flagship preamp) with external dual-mono tube-rectified and tube-regulated power supply.

The new supply upgrade is a SS version of the same tube-voltage-regulation circuits used in our flagship external preamp power supply design.

These dual-discrete voltage regulation circuits incorporate actual error amp technology and constant current sources, allowing for VERY tight voltage regulation.

As with all things ModWright, we NEVER cease in our pursuit of excellence.  We continue to look for ways to improve new designs. When we find design ideas of significant benefit, we strive to make these updates and upgrades available to existing products and modifications.  This allows for upgrade paths for those upgrading to new equipment as well as those looking to upgrade existing MWI gear.

I want to thank you all for your support of ModWright Instruments over the years.  This year marks a change in our world and some businesses are not going to survive this time.  We are staying the course and plan to continue to offer exceptional products and service for the short and long-term future.

Sincerely,

Dan W.

Dan,
How can I tell if the PS is the new version in the LS36.5? Thanks.

roscoeiii

Hi folks,

I wanted to confirm a couple things as I ponder a used Modwright SWL 9.0 or a new SWL 9.0 Signature.

Is the new power supply upgrade an option for a non-SE SWL 9.0? Doesn't look like it from Dan's comment above.

Are all new Signature SWL 9.0's coming with the new, improved power supply?

modwright

LS 36.5 power supply:  The PS upgrade to the LS 36.5 is pretty recent.  If a picture were sent of the stock supply, I can quickly tell you if it is current.  They are both tube-rectified, but the new supply is far more sophisticated.

All but the VERY newest 'Signature Edition' 9.0SE units do not have the upgraded power supply.  This upgrade is available for ANY and ALL existing SWL 9.0, SWL 9.0SE and SWL 9.0SE 'Signature Edition' units.

Thanks,

Dan W.

Well said jazzcourier!  Comments like yours, John's (JG2) and Dan nudged me into upgrading both my ModWright 9100ES and SWLP power supplies.  As always, I remained skeptical.   FedEx delivered my gear early Friday afternoon.  I was on third shift last week, and should have been sleeping, but could not pull myself away.  I kept switching between my favorite digital and vinyl recordings. WOW!  My wife even started dancing.  (Wish I could of stayed home ).  Listening at low levels is much more enjoyable with the upgrades.

I run 6900's in my 9100 and 5687WB Kuhl-Tube Raytheons in the SWLP.  My SWLP has the signature caps.  Mullards reside in the power supplies.  Before the power supply upgrades, the listening experience was like foreplay, now we have climax!

My only affiliation with Dan is being an extremely happy, paying customer.

Thanks to Dan and John!

Damn you, Metal Base GZ34!

Wow.
I just put a classic Phillips metal base GZ34 into my Sony 9100es' PSU.
It's supplanted a Mullard Fat Black Base.
The Sony sounds really, really great now - sounded not too shabby before but...
Highs are super clean and extended. The bass is deep and clean. But most impressive is the depth and 3Dness of the SS images.

I know, I know...more of the same but even more better!

Why is it these MB GZ34 are always better?  :duh:

Thanks guys!  It is my goal for ModWright to continue to find ways to improve our designs and offer new upgrades only when I feel that the improvements are truly significant.

Sincerely,

Dan
